to RetirementRetirement Tips
The North Carolina Division of Aging and Adult Services has a wealth of
information for retirees and those considering retiring in the state.
From moving assistance, long-term care and help with finances to
employment, home and community services, this is a great resource. Call
(919) 733-3983 or visit the website www.ncgov.com/ToLive.aspx.
Want to meet other retirees for fun and friendship? Aside from the usual
volunteering, church and employment venues, take up a new activity
altogether. Senior centers offer many opportunities to get acquainted
while keeping fit, trying different activities and having a good time.
Check them out (see our list in this chapter).
Maybe you're one of the many retirees who decides to start a small
business here. Resources abound to help you from the ground up. We
recommend Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE), 4010 Oleander
Drive, Wilmington, (910) 452-5395; and the Council for Entrepreneurial
Development (CED), 404 N. Third Street, Wilmington, (919) 549-7500.
Bridge players will
be happy to know that there is no shortage of games here. The YWCA of the
Lower Cape Fear has an extensive bridge program, from lessons for beginners
and those interested in learning to play duplicate bridge, to clubs that
meet at various times, six days a week. Call the Bridge Center, (910)
799-9643, for more information. Area senior centers, country clubs and
various community organizations also offer a variety of bridge-playing
opportunities. Watch the Wednesday "Neighbors" section of the Star-News
for details and competitions.
