Marinas and the Intracoastal Waterway Tips

Because the Cape Fear Coast is a popular boating area, marinas may be quite busy during summer months. You're wise to radio or call well in advance of your need for dockage, repairs or fuel.

The ICW is shallow in some areas, occasionally with very narrow cuts. Almost constant shifting of sand and mud bars are associated with storms, especially hurricanes. A good depth alarm is helpful. So is the knack for reading the water. Most groundings are only temporary inconveniences — careful attention to steering is usually all that's needed to stay out of trouble.

On the ICW you may encounter quite a few traffic jams, especially waiting for bridge openings. Know how to handle your boat in tight spaces and slow-moving traffic.
