When
packing for your outdoor adventure, remember these small but essential
items: Swiss Army knife, twine, lighter, flashlight, insect repellent and
basic first aid supplies. A cell phone also can be awfully handy in the
event of an emergency, and having a waterproof container for your phone
will help keep it functional in foul weather.
All
North Carolina state parks are wildlife preserves and prohibit the removal
of any plants, rocks, animals or artifacts from their sites. Be respectful
of these natural sites and leave nothing behind but footprints.
On
the first day of your trip, plan to arrive at your campsite with enough
daylight remaining to allow you to check the site for potential hazards,
such as broken glass, sharp objects, poison ivy and large ant hills (some
ants bite in North Carolina), before you set-up camp. Be smart and try and
avoid campsites that are low lying in order to avoid waking up to a
flooded tent during an overnight storm.
