Most public areas are off-limits to
skateboarders and in-line skaters. That means no boarding on streets,
sidewalks, parking lots, boardwalks or other tempting places.
Skateboarding is permitted on the UNCW campus, where responsible boarders
who respect property may ride freely. Bald Head Island allows boarding on
roadways, and Carolina Beach permits it on the walkway around Carolina
Beach Lake. Also, the area has several well-designed, safe skate parks
where boarding is very much alive and well. Surf shops are the best places
to find everything you'll need for skateboarding and in-line skating,
including parts and accessories, as well as skate wear, designer eyewear
and shoes. (See the
Watersports chapter for a list of surf shops.)
Greenfield Grind Skate Park The City of Wilmington's lighted outdoor
skate park is open to both in-line skaters and skateboarders. All use the
same area, which features a banked street course, hips, rails, bowls and
ledges. A helmet, pads and waiver are required, and skaters must be at
least 7 years old. Skaters 12 and younger must have parental supervision.
Entry fee is $2 for non-members; members are admitted free. Annual
membership rate for New Hanover County residents is $50. A non-county
resident membership is $75. The park offers beginner clinics and skate
camps for kids during the summer, as well as snowboard trips for the 18+
age group during the winter. In addition, the park hosts events such as
team demonstrations and competitions. Call the park or stop by to find out
about upcoming events. Skate park hours are Tuesday through Saturday noon
to 10 PM and Sunday 1 to 8 PM. The park is closed on Mondays.
Oak Island Skate Park Even if you are a mere spectator sitting in the
bleachers, you will enjoy watching the creativity and athletic ability
displayed at this skate park designed by the youth of Oak Island. The
140-foot by 60-foot skate park contains combinations of quarter pipes,
half pipes, banks, a street spine, a fly box, a spine and a pyramid —
none of which exceeds 4 feet in height. Users are required to wear
protective equipment, including helmet, knee and elbow pads, and wrist
guards. Skateboards, inline skates and roller skates are acceptable, but
they must have rubber wheels and be in good working condition. Regular
sessions and sessions grouped according to age and/or skill level are
scheduled. Call the recreation center for times and fees.
The Skate Barn This is the area's top indoor skateboarding facility.
The Skate Barn features a 6-foot ramp, 3-foot and 5-foot-deep bowls and
a full street course as well as an accessories shop, snacks, video games
and a Foosball table. Release forms must be signed to use the facility
(parents or guardians must sign for children younger than 18). To get
there, take U.S. 17 to Hampstead, turn west onto Peanut Road, then right
onto unpaved Pansy Lane. The Skate Barn is open Monday through Friday
noon to 10 PM. On Saturday mornings there is a beginners-only session
from 11 AM to 1 PM, and then the facility is open for everyone else
until 10 PM. Sunday it's open from 1 to 6 PM. Call for off-season hours.
Check out the new Double-Wide Skate and Surf Shop behind the Skate Barn
for name-brand surf and skate gear and boards.
