Disc Golf

New Hanover Disc Club

New Hanover County Parks Department
(910) 798-7181

One of the world's fastest growing sports is disc golf, which combines the fun of Frisbee with the challenge and strategy of traditional golf. Instead of using clubs and balls, the game is played with specially designed discs that are somewhat smaller and heavier than regular flying discs and can travel very complicated paths. A disc golf course can have anywhere from nine to 27 holes (actually heavy wire baskets on posts), though most courses have 18. Course length is roughly one-third that of a traditional golf course.

Locally, disc golf can be played at Castle Hayne Park off Parmele Road at the end of Old Avenue. It's free and fun. Discs may be purchased at Play It Again Sports, 3530 S. College Road, (910) 791-1572, and Buddha's Belly, 4405 Wrightsville Avenue, (910) 792-0085. They cost between $8 and $19. Call the New Hanover County Parks Department for more information.
