Calabash

Calabash Seafood Hut
$$-$$$
1125 River Rd., Calabash
(910) 579-6723

Don't be surprised to find this tiny place with a line of customers stretching around the corner. It's that popular, as much for its low, low prices as for the food, which is as good as anywhere in Calabash. The seafood platters are huge, offering combinations of Calabash-style fish, shrimp, oysters, crab and scallops. Even the biggest appetites are satisfied with the daily lunch specials. Sandwich offerings include soft-shell crab in season. Children will enjoy many items that are not even on the children's menu. All meals are served with cole slaw, french fries and hushpuppies. The atmosphere is clean and bright, and everyone is friendly. The Hut also serves dinner, and it does a brisk take-out business through the street-side window. The Hut is closed Mondays. Call ahead for take-out.

The Coleman's Original Calabash Seafood Restaurant
$$
9931 Nance St., Calabash
(910) 579-6875

Seafood! You'll find everything from oyster stew and teriyaki shrimp to stuffed flounder in hollandaise and soft-shell crabs. But if your taste buds are set for hamburger, chicken or steak, you can indulge them here as well. Coleman's is open every day except Wednesday for lunch and dinner year round, so take yourself down to the foot of River Road. There you will find other restaurants, but Coleman's is the one with its name up in lights.

Ella's of Calabash
$$-$$$
1148 River Rd., Calabash
(910) 579-6728

Ella's has been featured in Coastal Living magazine and in April of 2004 it was chosen for inclusion in Southern Living magazine's special publication, Favorites, which features "204 Food Finds Across the Region." Ella's was also voted "Best Seafood in Brunswick County" in 2008. Ella's remains one of the stalwarts of Calabash. It stays open most of the off-season, and it's been doing so since 1950. Ella's draws patrons with good food, affordable prices and a casual, friendly atmosphere. Ella's offers a hearty lunch special that's a real bargain (choice of two kinds of seafood, plus slaw, hushpuppies and fries). Steaks, chicken, oyster roasts (in season), mixed drinks and a children's menu are also available. Ella's is open daily for lunch and dinner. It is located midway between the waterfront and Beach Drive (N.C. Highway 179).
