Shallotte

Shallotte was named for the Shallotte River, which runs through the town. Located midway between Wilmington and Myrtle Beach and within 10 minutes of the beaches, the town of Shallotte is best known as the commercial center of the county. The town has a year-round population of approximately 1,700. Housing developments include Rivers Edge Golf Club and Plantation, Brierwood Estates, Marsh Cove, Old Shallotte, River Heights, Mulberry Creek, Copas Shores, The Highlands, Wildwood Village, Woodside Farms, Rutledge and Woodsong, a stewardship development. Leland

Brunswick County is the 14th fastest growing county in the nation and, with 19 municipalities, has more municipalities than any other North Carolina county. Leland, just across the Cape Fear River from Wilmington, is one of the fastest growing communities in southeastern North Carolina. In 2004 the town doubled its size by annexing Brunswick Forest, a 4,900-acre tract. A U.S. Highway 17 by-pass is planned, which will allow access to the town directly from Interstate 40 without the need to travel through Wilmington. These changes are expected to swell the population from its current 9,642, the largest in the county, to more than 20,000. New developments have provided newcomers with quality housing choices. With the addition of a Wal-Mart and numerous other retail facilities, locals no longer have to journey across the bridge for their shopping needs. This thriving suburb promises to continue expansion, raising land value and creating a "bedroom community" for neighboring Wilmington. Housing developments include Waterford of the Carolinas, Magnolia Greens, The Bluff on the Cape Fear, Palm Cove of the Carolinas, Lanville Trace, Snee Farm, Hunter's Ridge, Rices Creek Estate, Creeks Edge, Brunswick River Estates, Brunswick Forest and Westgate, a mixed-use community. Single-family homes in the Leland area may range from $155,335 to $256,000; lots from $35,000 to $175,000 on the ICW, and condos between $210,400 and $225,000.RP 06-02-08

Bald Head Island

Bald Head Island is a beautiful bit of land where there are no high-rises, no shopping malls, no crowds and no cars. Everyone either walks or travels by electric golf cart or bicycle. To get there you will need you own power boat in order to cross the mouth of the Cape Fear River. Failing that, you can enjoy the exhilarating, 20-minute ride in one of the passenger ferries that depart from the ferry landing at Indigo Plantation in Southport.

In addition to 14 miles of beautiful beaches you will find the historic lighthouse Old Baldy, the Smith Island Museum and the Bald Head Island Conservancy. Opportunities for fine and casual dining range from the elegant Bald Head Island Club, with its pool, a George Cobb–designed golf course and tennis courts, to the deli at the Maritime Market. There are some interesting shops as well as a marina. A resort atmosphere prevails, and the year-round residential population count is quite low, about 214.

Bald Head Island is largely a vacation spot where most of the homes are available for weekly rental. Single-family homes, villas and townhouses dot the island and are connected by paved golf-cart paths. Developments include Keeper's Landing at Cape Fear Station, Harbour Village and The Hammocks. Home sites range from $269,900 to more than $3,700,000. Home sales begin at $200,000 for an older home and climb upward to well above $4 million. Condos and stand-alone town homes range from $275,000 to more than $750,000, while four-week timeshares can be purchased anywhere from $100,000 to $250,000.RP 06-02-08

Southport/Oak Island

Southport's geographical location on the Cape Fear River near the Atlantic Ocean provides some lovely coastal scenery. But the town's location also made it an ideal location for riverboat captains who settled there and incorporated it in 1805. It is largely a charming town — quaint, quiet and historic, the streets lined with ancient live oaks. Bald Head Island lies just off Southport to the east. Oak Island serves as a barrier to the ocean on the south side. On a clear day you will have an excellent view of Old Baldy, the historic lighthouse on Bald Head Island as well as the Oak Island Lighthouse.

Southport's Victorian homes date from the late 1800s and offer mostly restored, single-family residences. Houses on the waterfront are larger, and a 2,100-square-foot home may run upward from $2,200,000. Newer homes may cost more. Along River Drive, one can spend more than $1.3 million. Naturally, the farther back from the water, the lower the price. A nice finished house in Southport will average around $500,000 for 2,300 square feet. Condos range from $137,500 to $599,000.

Subdivision areas are growing rapidly in and near Southport. These include Indigo Plantation, Arbor Creek, The Landing at Southport, Harbor Oaks, Carolina Place, Cades Cove, Marsh Creek, The Cottages at Price's Creek, Mariner's Pointe, Dutchman Village, Rivermist, Smithville Woods, River Run Plantation and St. James Plantation, which is a gated community. These neighborhoods offer a broad range of new homes in attractive settings with some very pleasant amenities.

Oak Island has two beach communities: Caswell Beach and the Town of Oak Island. Both of these communities have many resort rentals, but they are overwhelmingly occupied by permanent residents. And why not? Many people who have been vacationing here for the fishing, swimming, watersports and the natural beauty of the area end up retiring to this family-oriented island. Caswell Beach, which is named for Fort Caswell (c. 1826), is a quiet family town of about 460 residents. Magnificent views of both the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway can be had from the second floor of homes on the east end of the island. It is also home to the Oak Island Lighthouse, which has the second brightest light in the world. Housing Developments here include the Arboretum and Ocean Greens.

The Town of Oak Island, with a population of 7,300, is the largest geographical area on the island. It has recently annexed territory on the mainland side of the mile-long high-rise bridge which connects the two. Included in this territory is South Harbour Village, a PUD. You will find restaurants, nightlife, shopping at small boutiques, miniature golf, a recreation center and other attractions on the island. In fact it has the largest commercial district of all the Brunswick County islands. The miles of south-facing beaches afford opportunities for recreational activities, including swimming, surfing, volleyball, dolphin-watching, surf-fishing and more. There are more than 50 beach accesses and two fishing piers located here and fishing tournaments abound.

The few small developments on the island include Oceanside at Oak Island, East Beach and Turtle Creek by the Sea. Condominiums include: Southern Shore Villas, Savannah Crossing, Long Bay Commons and Yaupon Dunes. At the center of the island, you can expect to pay from $193,000 to $450,000 for a home. Oceanside properties from $450,000 to $1.8 million, and Intracoastal Waterway properties from $500,000 to $1.3 million. Condos may range from $189,000  to $659,000 and lots from $79,000 to $1.8 million.RP 06-02-08

Holden Beach

A remarkable bridge that connects the mainland to Holden Beach rises 65 feet above the Intracoastal Waterway providing a stunning view of the ocean and a sweeping entry to the island. Benjamin Holden bought the island in 1756 and for generations the family farmed and fished there. In the 1920s they began developing the resort community that thrives today. Fresh seafood, great fishing, quiet beaches, beautiful sunrises and sunsets provide for many memorable days.

The island has been rated one of the best family beaches in the country by National Geographic Traveler magazine; as one of the top beaches in the country by the 2004 AAA Beach Travel Journal; and in 2005, USA Today reported that it was named as one of the top ten family beaches by "Dr. Beach."

The permanent residents love the island as well and the year-round population stands at 900. Housing developments in the area include: SeaScape at Holden Plantation, Seawatch at Sunset Harbor, Lockwood Folly, Oyster Harbour at Holden Beach, Davenport, Colonial Beach, Harbor Acres, Dunescape, and Dolphin Shores at Holden Beach, a gated community. An oceanfront, single-family home may cost from $475,000 to more than $3 million. Second-row homes, canal homes and dune homes can range from $500,000 to $2 million. Condominiums and townhomes range from $137,500 to $1,299,000. Home sites range from $55,000 to more than $2 million.RP 06-02-08

Ocean Isle Beach

Ocean Isle Beach is an 8-mile-long, quarter-mile-wide island that lies at the center of South Brunswick's three barrier islands. The sandy beaches face directly south and beach residents are accustomed to seeing the sun rise and set over the ocean. The island has a stable year-round population of about 425 residents, ensuring a sense of community. There are a variety of shops and small galleries that include local artwork. The Museum of Coastal Carolina is a storehouse of historical artifacts and regional natural history information and exhibits. Housing developments in the area include Maritime Place, Ocean Isle West, Channel Side, Brick Landing Plantation, Brunswick Shores, Bent Tree Plantation, Ocean Isle Palms and Waterway Cove. Ocean Isle Beach is an appealing residential environment of largely single-family homes that start at more than $1.2 million on the oceanfront and Intracoastal Waterway and range from $585,000 to $1 million in the middle of the island.RP 06-02-08

Calabash

The fishing village of Calabash is widely known as the "Seafood Capital of the World" with its share of world-famous restaurants that specialize in Calabash-style seafood. It's first restaurant, an oyster roast, opened in 1935 in a shed with sawdust floors. Rumor has it that Jimmy Durante's famous line, "Goodnight, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are," was directed to a certain restaurant owner in Calabash who had served him the most memorable seafood dinner ever. During the season you can purchase shrimp directly from the shrimp boats at the dock. Deep-sea fishing and chartered tours are available as well. Calabash attracts a wide range of families and individuals who appreciate the easy pace of the area, the art galleries and specialty shops and its proximity to the Myrtle Beach and Wilmington entertainment and cultural activities.
