Marinas
Wrightsville Beach
Boaters love Wrightsville Beach's many accommodating marinas, terrific seafood restaurants and relaxed ambiance. Whatever your marine needs, they can be met here. Facilities are available for everything from repairs to fishing gear. However, if you require groceries or want to do major shopping, you'll have to go to the mainland. By sea, Wrightsville Beach is approximately at mile marker 283. For the exact location, check your marine charts. Several marinas are located on Airlie Road, just before the drawbridge leading to Wrightsville Beach. Others are across the bridge on Harbour Island. For those with trailerable craft, there's a free Wildlife Access Ramp just to the north of the drawbridge on Harbour Island.

Just south of the Bradley Creek bridge on Oleander Drive and on the western shore of the ICW, this private membership marine facility serves the local community, but no transients. Wet slips can accommodate watercraft up to 65 feet, and dry storage is available for up to 28 feet. Slips are leased by the year, or they may be purchased. Fuel is available nearby. Bradley Creek Marina is close to Masonboro Inlet, which allows access to the Atlantic Ocean.
Bridge Tender Marina and Restaurant
1418 Airlie Rd., Wilmington
(910) 256-6550
On Airlie Road at the Wrightsville Beach drawbridge is a marina with a bonus: a great local seafood and steak restaurant. The marina offers all amenities, including gas and diesel fuel. All docks were rebuilt in 2005. One word of caution, however: The current is very swift here, so mind your slippage on entering and be ready with a boathook to fend off any craft docked nearby.

Wrightsville Beach Marina offers power, water, cable TV, WiFi Internet connection, a swimming pool and fuel. Mechanical repairs can be arranged. For dining, the Bluewater Grill overlooks the docks, welcoming famished boaters to enjoy prime rib and seafood.
Because the Cape Fear Coast is a popular boating area, marinas may be quite busy during summer months. You're wise to radio or call well in advance of your need for dockage, repairs or fuel.
Carolina Beach
Below Masonboro Sound you will find a stretch of water with no marinas. The shoreline becomes residential in character, and there is not another port until you get close to Carolina Beach.

Carolina Beach State Park Marina
Carolina Beach State Park, Carolina Beach
(910) 458-7770
At the west end of Snow's Cut, which connects the Cape Fear River with the ICW, is Carolina Beach State Park. On land, just go over the Snow's Cut Bridge on U.S. 421 S., take the first right at the second traffic light, which is Dow Road, then after about 0.2 mile, take another right onto State Park Road. The park marina offers a ramp, fuel, a modified ship's store and ample overnight dockage. If you're weary of being on a boat, you can pitch a tent and roast marshmallows over a campfire in the park, or you can take advantage of some of the park's five great trails. The Fly Trap Trail is one of the favorites. Along the trail you can look at the hungry plants known as Venus Flytraps, but don't touch! The Sugarloaf Trail follows along the Cape Fear River, providing beautiful water views as you explore nature.
Wilmington
Coming from Carolina Beach by boat, it's a 15-mile ride from Snows Cut across the Cape Fear River into Southport and the more protected Intracoastal Waterway. This is a major shipping lane to the State Port at Wilmington, as well as the route for the Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry, so do keep a watchful eye. Before crossing over, take a sidetrip up the Cape Fear River from Snows Cut, unless you have a sailboat with a mast taller than 65 feet. The Cape Fear Memorial Bridge, just south of downtown Wilmington, is a bascule bridge with a clearance of just 65 feet. If you can get under, head north up the river for one of the most memorable trips on your cruise. You'll find increasingly improved opportunities to dock, and you can take advantage of visiting Wilmington's Historic District.
"Those who miss the many attractions of this seagoing community will be less for the omission," wrote Claiborne Young in his Cruising Guide to Coastal North Carolina. After stopping to enjoy the city's downtown and Riverwalk, head up the Northeast Cape Fear River. You'll pass under the Isabelle Holmes Bridge, which opens at 10 AM and 2 PM and on demand from 6 PM to 6 AM (the bridge tender monitors channels 13 and 18A), and you'll soon find yourself in the midst of spectacular scenery. Continue upriver and you'll see the ruins of antebellum rice plantations from 200 years ago, with endless creeks to explore. You can cruise for miles in complete tranquility with breathtaking scenery all around.
