Especially in Historic Downtown Wilmington, many restrictions apply to the restoration of older homes. Before even contemplating exterior work on a house that is designated "historic," do your research, beginning with Preservation North Carolina (see below) and the Historic Wilmington Foundation, 702 Market Street, Wilmington, (910) 762-2511.
