Architects

Before you even begin the building process, you need to define what you want the finished product to be. Whether you're starting from an unfinished lot with the intent of building a house or you're wanting to expand or alter an existing structure, an architect can make your vision a reality. In addition, services may include assistance with site studies, planning and zoning approvals, and financing. Specially trained to help you get the most for your investment, an architect creates total environments, both interiors and exteriors. You can expect expert recommendations and a range of options as well as solutions to design problems. During the long building process, your architect represents you and looks out for your interests, will help find qualified contractors, smoothes the process and monitors the work to assure it is completed according to your plan. Your architect should know the local building codes, available materials, site conditions, styles, climate restrictions and building costs. Your plans may cost from $500 to $15,000, depending on the level of services you receive; make sure you know the cost and exactly what you will be getting for your money. The American Institute of Architects, (800) 242-3837 or (202) 626-7300, www.aia.org, has a wealth of helpful information, including a 20-page downloadable booklet, "You and Your Architect," as well as an architect finder. Here is a list of some local firms that offer residential architecture services.PW 06-15-07
