Cape Fear Hospital is full-service community hospital with 141 licensed beds. It provides a range of services, including medical, surgical and ambulatory care, 24-hour emergency services, outpatient surgery, radiology (MRI, CT scan, ultrasound), laboratory facilities and a specialized orthopedic center. The Cape Fear Orthopedic Specialty Center features trained teams of nurses, technicians and orthopedic surgeons who are board-certified or eligible in orthopedic surgery. The center includes specialists in hand, foot, ankle and spine as well as arthroscopic surgeries, sports medicine and joint replacement. The Oleander Rehabilitation Center is conveniently located near Cape Fear Hospital for those patients who need further therapy after their procedures. Total joint replacement patients can benefit from an innovative program called Joint Camp at Cape Fear Hospital. Similar to an athletic training program, Joint Camp takes a team approach to pre-surgical care and post-surgical rehabilitation. Joint Camp participants seem to recover more quickly than their traditional joint-replacement counterparts. Cape Fear Hospital, a branch of the New Hanover Regional Medical Center, is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

New Hanover Regional Medical Center has long-standing roots in southeastern North Carolina. The medical center has been offering quality care close to home for generations of families through all stages of life as well as to those who are here visiting.

The 628-bed regional referral center provides a full continuum of care from the littlest ones in the Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and pediatric unit to those in need of adult health services and palliative care. Behavioral health and rehabilitation hospitals are also part of the full scope of care. The medical center has one of the state’s few trauma centers certified at Level II or above. And it operates New Hanover Regional EMS, which provides paramedic services, air and ground critical care transport, and 24-hour nurse information services.

As a cardiac care leader in the state, New Hanover Regional's Coastal Heart Center has the area’s only open-heart surgery program. The Heart Center houses a 16-bed Coronary Care Unit and a 14-bed Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit as well as cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology and cardiovascular labs. The Coastal Heart Center is host to one of the state’s largest cardiac rehabilitation programs and offers preventive cardiac risk reduction programs such as Intervent™ and Weight Transitions. Zimmer Cancer Center, a 30,000-square-foot facility on the medical center's grounds, consolidates all outpatient cancer services into one location. The Cancer Center's program has been designated nationally as a teaching hospital with services that include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, gynecological oncologists specializing in cancer care for women, surgical and medical treatments, as well as participation in cancer research. A linear accelerator, used in conjunction with a PET/CT scanner, allows technicians more accuracy in the treatment of tumors.

With a mission of providing family-centered care, Women’s and Children’s Services at New Hanover Regional delivers care for families in need. The Women’s Unit serves women needing gynecological or other surgical procedures, while the Family Birthplace delivers 4,000 babies a year, including high-risk deliveries. The Family Birthplace specializes in obstetrical services that allow for a family-centered birthing experience. In Women's Health Specialties clinics, a team of perinatologists care for women with high-risk pregnancies, and a board-certified reproductive endocrinologist works with those who are having difficulty conceiving. The High Risk Antepartum Unit cares for women who require hospitalization during their pregnancy.

New Hanover Regional Medical Center has the only Pediatric Unit in a six-county region. The unit is specifically designed to meet both the medical and post-surgical needs of children. Medical equipment is hidden from view, and specially trained therapists help children cope with being in the hospital. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Neonatal Transitional Care Unit provide care for critically ill newborns. In the Transitional Unit, parents room with their preterm babies while learning skills, under the supervision of a nurse, to prepare them for caring for their babies at home.

New Hanover Regional also offers comprehensive imaging and outpatient diagnostic services at several locations to make it as convenient as possible for patients. The Forum Diagnostic Center on Military Cutoff offers CT scans, ultrasound, routine radiography, mammography, bone density scans and lab services. The Medical Mall, beside the hospital on 17th Street, recently added a PET/CT scanner so that cancer patients can have their procedures without having to drive hours away. At New Hanover Regional, patients who are claustrophobic can choose to have an MRI in the open magnet or use special goggles to watch a DVD to make it more relaxing.

The Coastal Rehabilitation Hospital is for patients with traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, neurological disorders, orthopedic conditions, stroke and other conditions that create a loss of mobility. It utilizes general rehabilitative programs, therapeutic equipment, a day hospital program, a therapeutic pool and Easy Street™, a nationally recognized program that simulates real life environments. The Independence Rehabilitation Center and the Oleander Rehabilitation Center offer outpatient services.

Also located on NHRMC's campus is the Oaks Behavioral Health Hospital. It offers inpatient and outpatient programs for adults with special units for women and dual-care unit for those who have problems with chemical addiction and psychiatric needs. The partial hospitalization program provides outpatient treatment and counseling services. Psychiatric evaluations are available 24 hours a day.

New Hanover Regional Medical Center includes Cape Fear Hospital on Wrightsville Avenue and also includes the management of Pender Memorial Hospital in Burgaw. NHRMC and Cape Fear Hospital enjoy the prestigious Nursing Magnet status and are prominent teaching sites affiliated with the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine.

As a public, not-for-profit network, NHHN offers care to everyone who needs it, regardless of his or her ability to pay. The hospitals in the network provide more than $30 million a year in indigent care, often to those who would not otherwise have access to healthcare. New Hanover Health Network is one of the largest health networks in the state, with about 4,700 employees, 490 physicians and 900 volunteers. Its volunteer Board of Trustees is appointed by the New Hanover County Commissioners, with representation from Pender County. The network receives no local tax support.

Immediate/Urgent Care

For non-surgical medical services, Wilmington and the surrounding communities offer an ample number of immediate-care centers, sometimes referred to as urgent-care centers. Vacationers or residents with relatively minor injuries, illnesses or conditions may prefer the convenience of visiting these centers over making an appointment to see a private doctor. Illnesses and injuries beyond the centers' capabilities are referred to area hospitals. These are convenient places to get flu and tetanus shots or to have a limited variety of tests or physicals for school, sports or insurance purposes. Most centers have their own labs and X-ray services, and all are staffed by qualified, licensed physicians and nurses.

Be advised that most of the centers operate on a first-come basis, so don't expect to be able to make an appointment. However, serious illnesses, injuries or conditions will receive first priority. These medical service facilities are not open 24 hours a day. In many cases, they are not open seven days a week. A few medical or family practice centers offer walk-in appointments. If you need attention and choose any of these centers, you're advised to phone ahead.

Visitors to Topsail Island are within a one-hour drive to hospitals and clinics in Wilmington; another public hospital within driving range is Onslow Memorial, (910) 577-2345, in Jacksonville.

For serious injuries and illnesses, the coastal region has ample emergency response services that can be reached by calling 911. Listing here is for your convenience only and does not imply endorsement of any facility.

In addition, WHA has highly specialized hospitalist physicians dedicated in the care of their patients requiring hospitalization.

WHA provides several easily accessible outpatient facilities covering services such sleep medicine, physical therapy, a travel clinic, neurodiagnostic testing, radiology and MRI services. Though large in scope, WHA takes a uniquely patient-focused approach to its delivery of patient services. WHA maintains an active website as a community resource with information regarding important developments in the medical field. WHA has incorporated an electronic medical record, which further empowers its physicians to care and co-care for patients in a cooperative approach.
