spacer.gif (818 bytes)The southern coast's excellent healthcare facilities and services — a result of rapid growth, increased development and a booming retirement population in North Carolina's southern coastal region — rival those in larger cities. However, that hasn't always been the case and, as recently as 25 years ago, residents sought advanced medical treatment in larger university medical centers or metropolitan hospitals.

Now, in the twenty-first century, residents and visitors have access to more sophisticated health care and state-of-the-art technology and are no longer forced to travel inland for treatment of serious illness or injury. In New Hanover County, more than 500 practicing physicians in a wide range of medical and surgical specialties now utilize some of the most technologically progressive facilities and equipment in the state through the New Hanover Health Network. This network, the primary source of healthcare in the Greater Wilmington area, comprises three formerly independent hospitals — New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Cape Fear Hospital and Pender Memorial Hospital — as well as two facilities located on the medical center's campus — Coastal Rehabilitation Hospital and The Oaks Behavioral Health Hospital. Affiliate agencies include New Hanover Regional Medical Center Emergency Medical Services, Pender Home Health, Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter and the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation. This far-reaching partnership enlarges and enhances the region's overall healthcare capabilities through upgraded and expanded facilities, more options in a range of medical and surgical specialties and improved access to healthcare.

Although smaller in size, Brunswick County's two hospitals — Brunswick Community Hospital and Dosher Memorial Hospital — offer a wide range of services from general medicine and round-the-clock emergency room physicians to medical/surgical specialties and community healthcare affiliates. When necessary, medical care beyond the scope of their services is referred to Wilmington's larger hospitals. Residents and vacationers along the Brunswick beaches will find these smaller hospitals more convenient and an excellent source when medical attention is needed.ZH 11-13-07
