Annual Tournaments

Challenging courses in beautiful settings plus wonderful weather set the stage for competitive golf events throughout the area. Tournaments are popular as fund-raising activities, and a number of local organizations sponsor annual events. Many local courses host their own tournaments as well. Local chambers of commerce can provide information (see our Area Overview chapter for a listing). Major tournaments are announced in the Star-News "Today," "Currents" or "Sports" sections; some weekly publications, such as Encore, carry details, too.

Wilmington Golf Course, 311 S. Wallace Avenue, Wilmington, (910) 791-0558, sponsors an annual Men's Amateur Championship in September and a Women's Amateur Championship in October. These tournaments are open to golfers of all ages who have an established U.S.G.A. handicap. The fee for this two-day event is $80 per player, which includes lunch both days.

Tournaments, which are held nearly year round in the Southport/Oak Island/South Brunswick Islands, include the following:

In May the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce, (910) 754-6644, (800) 426-6644, hosts the Brunswick County Chamber Golf Tournament and the Southport-Oak Island Chamber of Commerce, (910) 457-6964, (800) 457-6964, hosts the Southport-Oak Island Area Golf Classic.

In June the Brunswick Literacy Council Golf Tournament, (910) 754-7323, the Southport Rotary Club Golf Tournament, (910) 253-0470, and the Kiwanis Captain's Choice Golf Tourney, (910) 253-0731, are held. The Mayor's Cup Golf Tournament, (910) 845-2762, (910) 845-2625, (910) 845-2794, is held at The Lakes Country Club in Boiling Spring Lakes; proceeds benefit a different local charity each year.

In August the county women's golf clubs, (910) 754-5726, hold the Women's Golf Club County Championship, which benefits Hope Harbor Home.

In November there are the Calabash VFW Post 7288 Annual Charity Golf Tournament, (910) 579-3577, and the Annual Southport Christian School Golf Tournament, (910) 457-5060.

For best results while changing your golf swing, try combining it with a flexibility program to be sure your muscles can handle your new action. The last thing you want to do is make an alteration that ends up causing you injury!

Associations

Golf associations are primarily connected to local courses. For example, Porters Neck Country Club (PNCC) has men's golf and ladies' golf associations that are open to members only. However, Topsail Greens Golf Club men's and women's golf associations are open to both members and non-members. Wilmington Golf Course is a municipal course, which does not have members, therefore, anyone can join the men's or women's golf associations. Check the courses that interest you regarding associations.

Wilmington

This EWGA chapter was founded in 2005 and offers numerous golf and social activities for golfers of every ability. The group is comprised primarily of members from New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties and includes women of all ages, from young professionals to retirees.

During the warm months, there are a number of events on offer to members. The Link Up To Golf program is a multi-session instructional course for new and returning golfers. There's also the Saturday Traveling League, which allows members to sample some of the area's numerous courses for a reasonable price. Members can also enjoy match play and a 9-hole scramble league on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In addition, the EWGA hold clinics that break down each individual's mechanics and provide help on specific aspects of the game. They also hold informational seminars that help with understanding handicaps, rule interpretations and other aspects of golf.

Special events are held during Women's Golf Month, for the Chapter Championship and the season wrap-up, in addition to an annual membership appreciation banquet.
