Retirement Tips

The local chapter of SCORE (Service Corps Of Retired Executives) offers free counseling on business matters such as putting together a marketing plan, starting a business, compiling financial statements, computerizing an office, obtaining small business loans and expanding business plans. Weekly sessions are held on Tuesdays at the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce in Kill Devil Hills. For more information, call the Chamber of Commerce, (252) 441-8144.

You don't have to limit yourself to the senior centers to socialize. Dare Voluntary Action Center is always looking for community volunteers, (252) 480-0500. Our cultural arts nonprofit groups such as the Theatre of Dare, Dare County Arts Council, and the Outer Banks Forum offer plenty of opportunities for you to volunteer your time and offer your expertise. See our Arts & Culture chapter for more information.

Many seniors who retire to the Outer Banks discover that instead of retiring, they get inspired to try second careers. There must be something in the salt air....

The Outer Banks Senior Games and Outer Banks Silver Arts Competition, held every April, give seniors 55 and older the opportunity to compete in games such as billiards, golf, table tennis, and bowling, and to display their talent and craftsmanship in the visual, literary, and performing arts. See our Annual Events chapter for more information.
