The
Army Corps of Engineers Research Pier just north of Duck is the only
oceanographic research pier of its kind in the world. A two-hour tour is
conducted each morning Monday through Friday, beginning at 10 AM, from mid
June through mid August.
From
mid June through August, the Nags Head Woods Preserve sponsors public
programs for all ages, including ecocamps, kayak tours, hikes, and family

Kitty
Hawk has several undisturbed natural areas, including Kitty Hawk Woods, a
vast maritime forest. This forest is significant in that it is home to a
wide variety of plant species not found again until 100 miles inland.
Manteo,
on Roanoke Island, celebrated its centennial in 1999. For some entertaining,
well-written history, look for Angel Ellis Khoury's book Manteo: A
Roanoke Island Town, available at local bookstores.
