traveling to or from the Outer Banks down U.S. 168 from Virginia, you may
wish to take a detour to Knotts Island. The free Currituck Sound Ferry,
(800) BY FERRY, will transport you to this little island, where you can'tour
Martin Vineyards, partake in a wine tasting, and pick your own peaches. Call

The
new bridge spanning
Croatan Sound is
officially named the
Virginia Dare Memorial
Bridge, but it*s also
known as the Croatan
Sound Bridge. Insiders
call it the “New
Bridge.” All three
names are recognized,
but not by everyone.
You may have to ask
for it by three different
names before you
get a response.
Many locals are
concerned--even
angry--about the bike
paths built along NC
12. The paths are
narrow and often
sand-covered, and locals
feel that encouraging
children
and adults to bicycle
alongside NC 12 is
inviting danger.
The
Bypass (U.S. 158) and the Beach Road (N.C. 12) are marked by mileposts that
originate at the Wright Memorial Bridge. So, if you're searching for an
address that reads MP 7, Beach Road in Kill Devil Hills, your destination
will be located seven miles south of the Wright Memorial Bridge on N.C. 12.
