Fishing Tips

When buying waders or boots, always buy them one and one-half sizes larger than your shoe size. The larger size will enable you to slip them off in the event that you step in a slough or fall overboard. Boots or waders filled with water will make you sink like a stone.

Twisted Fish, at MP 10 on the Bypass in Kill Devil Hills, has brightly painted life-sized fish made of wood that s been found washed up on the beach. If your offshore fishing trip turns out to be a bust, as least you can'take home a big dolphin or barracuda to hang on the wall.

It s customary to tip a charter mate about the same as you would tip a server in a restaurant--between 15 percent and 20 percent of your total bill.

Don't forget your camera--and plenty of film--when going out on a charter fishing trip. You'll want to record all those near-misses and great catches.

If you're going to be fishing without a local captain or guide, check on current regulations before embarking on your fishing trip. Some species, such as rockfish (striped bass) may only be kept certain days of the week, and fines for illegal fish can be substantial.
