Food for Thought

The reception is usually the most expensive and most fun part of a wedding. Your options include choosing a hotel or restaurant that provides all the necessary food and beverage services or engaging a caterer. Our Restaurants chapter lists a number of excellent places to host either a rehearsal dinner or a reception. Sanderling Inn in Duck and Penguin Isle in Nags Head are two of the larger facilities on the Outer Banks at which to host an extravagant fete. For more intimate gatherings, consider Blue Point Bar & Grill in Duck, Ocean Boulevard in Kitty Hawk, 1587 in Manteo, or Island Inn Restaurant on Ocracoke. The Sanderling Inn, Island Inn, and 1587 (at The Tranquil House Inn) provide accommodations as well.

If you have your reception at a beach house, a caterer takes complete charge while you enjoy the company of your guests. The caterer cleans up afterward. Expect to spend from $20 to $55 per guest, depending on your choice of menu and type of bar service.

Let Them Eat Cake

No wedding is complete without a wedding cake. And since this is the South, it's customary to have a groom's cake as well. If you need to make separate arrangements for your wedding cake, call well in advance because decorated wedding cakes take a lot of preparation. Also, if you're planning an out-of-doors midsummer wedding, bear in mind that the heat and humidity can cause some icings to melt. Be sure to advise the caterer or cake baker where the cake will be kept.

Outer Banks Honeymoons!

The Outer Banks has traditionally been for honeymooners, especially off-season, when the crowds are scarce, the prices are low, and the island feels like a private paradise. Consult our Accommodations and Weekly and Long-Term Cottage Rentals chapters for information on lodging. Then, think about all the wonderful diversions the Outer Banks has to offer that will make your honeymoon even more memorable. Depending upon the time of year and the amount of physical activity you're up for, you can do everything from visiting art galleries to trying your hand at hang gliding. Outdoor activities include bicycling, swimming, diving, playing golf, fly-fishing, deep-sea fishing, kayaking, sailing, and lying on the beach. Together, you can take an aero or dolphin tour, walk through the Elizabethan Gardens, or adventure off-road. You may wish to have a beach portrait taken or spend the day at a full-service spa. Numerous fine restaurants, rustic eateries, and establishments that provide outdoor entertainment are scattered through this area. Leaf through this guide; you'll find suggestions for each of the aforementioned activities and then some. We're convinced that couples who decide to honeymoon on this stretch of barrier islands will enjoy it so much that they'll want to keep coming back for each anniversary.
