over. Ocean Threads and Surfside Casuals,

sunglasses, and stickers. On the other end
of the plaza is Island Cycle, which rents,
repairs, and sells bicycles. Beach Pharmacy is here and sells an assortment of
arts-and-crafts supplies besides the usual
drugstore items. Sea Treasures sells fudge,
beachwear, and knickknacks. Try My Nuts
has yummy treats of all types, including, of
course, nuts. Chocolates, candy, popcorn,

the shop has been in business, it has
gained a reputation for being "the surfer's
surf shop," specializing in surfing only.
Scott, who has his own line of boards
called In The Eye, manufactures custom
boards and does repairs. Carol makes
clothing (her hand-sewn women's and
men's tops and children's shirts and dresses
are unique and colorful). The shop rents
surfboards, boogie boards, swim fins, wet
suits, and surf videos and sells surfing gear,
clothing, T-shirts, and sweatshirts. It's open

summer kitchen of an island house, Buxton
Village Books has been a village landmark
since 1984. This charming space is packed
with lots of good reads, including all the
current best-sellers, sea stories, hard-tofind Southern fiction, kids' books, and saltwater fly-fishing titles. In a room overlooking Pamlico Sound, you can browse over a
delightful selection of notecards and stationery. The owner, Gee Gee, is an avid

Indian Town Gallery and Gifts

Nestled in the woods, Indian Town represents artists from the local villages. Many
of the paintings have an Outer Banks
offshore-fishing theme. The gallery also

their bowls, pitchers, vases, vessels, platters, teakettles, miniatures, and fabulous
fish- and crab-imprinted hanging wall tiles.
Late afternoons, these hospitable potters

This is a special women's clothing boutique, one you wouldn't really expect to find on southern Hatteras Island. The store also carries groceries (including gourmet items), chocolates, fudge, books and magazines, T-shirts, sweatshirts, jewelry and gifts, plus sundries such as film, lotions, boogie boards, and hats. Don't miss the upstairs gift gallery. You can rent bicycles here, too. It's a good place to buy a Coke in a glass bottle and something to snack on for the ferry ride to Ocracoke. Right next to the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry docks at the southern end of Hatteras Village, this spiffy shopping center means you'll never again have a boring wait for the ferry. The only problem is that people get carried away with shopping and are late for boarding. Hatteras Landing Provision Company stocks a large selection of sweatshirts, T-shirts, and other clothing with Outer Banks themes, along with jackets, windbreakers, hats, and other clothing. Graveyard Deli and Market opens into the Provision Company and offers deli sandwiches, snacks, candy bars, chips, gum, drinks, beer, wine, and many sundries that you'll need for a day on the boat. Birthday Suits is an Outer Banks favorite, carrying fashionable swimwear for the whole family. For hard-to-fit women, there are bra-sized tops that can be mixed with separate bottoms, plus long-torso suits and maternity suits. Island
Shopping in Ocracoke is casual, interesting, and easily managed on foot. Small
shops are scattered throughout the village
and along the main street, on sandy lanes,
and in private homes. You'll also discover
that some dockside stores have the feel of
a general store. Ocracoke Village shops
offer a variety of local crafts, artwork,
quality accessories for the home, antiques,
beachwear, books, music, and magazines
as well as the ubiquitous T-shirts and even
a few souvenir mugs. An ABC package

This shopping complex houses Sally
Newell Interiors, with furniture, home-
decor accessories, window treatments,
and more for the home. Newell is a member of the American Society of Interior Designers and has designed many resdential and commercial interiors. Eleven Eleven Shades and Movies offers just that--highend sunglasses and video rentals. Ocracoke Restoration Co. is stocked with English stained glass, old and new furniture, architectural ornaments, old doorknobs and drawer pulls, and interesting salvaged materials. Pink Pig, housed next is chockfull of fun things for fun people. Dirty Girl, Paul Frank, and other cool items are featured.

The bath section carries Burt's Bees products as well. Books to Be Red has a wonderful selection of books by local authors, new-age journals, magazines, cards, and a paperback section of fiction, nonfiction, and children's books. Just past the Jolly Roger Pub and Marina is this little conglomeration of shops, not really connected but clustered around the post office. Downpoint Decoys, a small rustic shop under an old oak tree sells decoys both old and new and the local carver/proprietor is available to talk to. He also sells lures, painted oars, and wildlife art. Sweet Tooth tempts with candy, fudge, and ice cream. At Island Christmas Shop the holiday theme pervades throughout the gifts, accessories, trees, Santas, snowmen, ornaments, and fish.

Owner Philip Howard, a seventh-
generation Ocracoke Island resident, sells
his pen-and-ink and watercolor prints in
his shop. A fine selection of cassettes and
CDs features Celtic, blues, jazz, and bluegrass music. Musical instruments, such as
catpaws and strumsticks, help set a creative mood at this out-of-the-way place.
The instruments are lightweight and simple to play. You can pick up a mail-order
catalog at the shop or have one mailed to
you. Village Craftsmen closes for the
month of January.

Over the Moon is a wonderful shop filled
with handmade contemporary crafts.
More than 100 artists and craftspeople
provide work such as jewelry, porcelain,
and Brian Andreas's StoryPeople-books,
prints, and sculptures with insights written on the work. There are also pins and
magnet cards, Metamorphicards, and
hammock chairs. Pace yourself; this is a
place to linger. It is open Easter through
Thanksgiving.
Island Artworks

A brightly colored little shop across from
Over the Moon, Island Artworks is a fun
place to browse. It's a contemporary craft
gallery, with colorful jewelry by local artist
Kathleen O'Neal; fused glass and mosaics
by Libby Hicks; photography, watercolors,
pottery, woodworking, sculpture, mosaics,
birdbaths, garden stakes, and more.

These folks weave their own hammocks on
the premises, and you are welcome to
watch the process. The shop offers island
mementos, lighthouse afghans, jewelry,
and unique candles. You'll find a wide

guarantees to satisfy any sweet tooth. It's

Come listen to the tales of the notorious
Edward Teach-better known as Black-
beard the Pirate-at Teach's Hole. The
"piratical pirate-phernalia," as George and
Mickey Roberson call their collection,
includes a gift shop and exhibit. More than
1,000 pirate items, including a life-size recreation of Blackbeard in full battle dress
and artifacts from the 17th and 18th centuries, form the exhibit. One exhibit features
"Blackbeard's Doom" on an eight-minute
video viewed for a fee. Items in the gift
shop include pirate toys, music boxes,
movies, and more than 100 pirate book
titles, plus maps, flags, hats, T-shirts, costumes, ship models, and treasure coins. For

Artist Mary Bassell combines her own creations of custom stained-glass windows,

Glass Co. of Ocracoke, Ocracoke Restoration carries antique English stained glass,
wrought-iron gates, and other decorative
items. Most of their glass decorates windows and doors, though smaller stained-
glass pieces, many originally from porch
lanterns, can be found here. You can find
such imports as lamps and garden pieces,
plus an occasional armoire or table. The
store is open from March through January.
