Waves

Waves is home to only a few businesses, including Hatteras Island Surf Shop (see our Water Sports chapter) and Michael Halminski's Photography Gallery (see our Arts and Culture chapter for details). St. Waves Plaza is a new shopping complex. Kitty Hawk Kites is a traditional stop when visiting the Outer Banks. Find kites, toys for all ages, and outdoor wear for the adventure minded. Ocean Annie's stocks some of the most beautiful pottery you'll find anywhere. Wind chimes, jewelry, and gourmet coffee are also sold here. Just for the Beach rents bicycles, kayaks, beach gear, and baby needs.

Salvo

Salvo is a sleepy little village, so don't expect much in the way of shopping.

This small shopping center houses two of the Outer Banks's most popular stores-Ocean Annie's and Kitty Hawk Kites/ Carolina Outdoors. Ocean Annie's is a craft gallery that sells pottery, wind chimes, prints, artwork, wooden boxes, coffee, and the like. Kitty Hawk Kites/Carolina Outdoors is a sports store selling kites and offering kayak ecotours, kite- boarding lessons, and parasailing. It's also an outfitter, selling sporty outdoor clothes and gear for all your adventures.

Hatteras Plaza

This Avon plaza is anchored by Food Lion and an Ace Hardware store. Exotic Cargo features beautiful, handcrafted home accents brought to you from the world over. Ocean Threads and Surfside Casuals, right next door to each other, have similar offerings-surfwear by Billabong, Roxy, and others plus bathing suits, T-shirts, sandals, sunglasses, and stickers. On the other end of the plaza is Island Cycle, which rents, repairs, and sells bicycles. Beach Pharmacy is here and sells an assortment of arts-and-crafts supplies besides the usual drugstore items. Sea Treasures sells fudge, beachwear, and knickknacks. Try My Nuts has yummy treats of all types, including, of course, nuts. Chocolates, candy, popcorn, and even T-shirts are sold here. Sew Many Things has beach souvenirs, jewelry, stained glass, and more.

If you'd like to keep the rest of the family entertained while you shop, drop them off at RC Theaters. The theater has four showings daily of first-run films during summer. Call for off-season schedule.

Buxton

A 5-mile drive south of Avon through Cape Hatteras National Seashore brings you to the village of Buxton, where your discoveries will range from a general store and bait and tackle shop to specialty boutiques. Buxton's market, Conner's, offers groceries and basic supplies year-round.

Natural Art is owned by Scott and Carol Busbey, serious surfers who love the sport and the lifestyle. During the 25-plus years the shop has been in business, it has gained a reputation for being "the surfer's surf shop," specializing in surfing only. Scott, who has his own line of boards called In The Eye, manufactures custom boards and does repairs. Carol makes clothing (her hand-sewn women's and men's tops and children's shirts and dresses are unique and colorful). The shop rents surfboards, boogie boards, swim fins, wet suits, and surf videos and sells surfing gear, clothing, T-shirts, and sweatshirts. It's open March through December. Comfortably nestled in what was once the summer kitchen of an island house, Buxton Village Books has been a village landmark since 1984. This charming space is packed with lots of good reads, including all the current best-sellers, sea stories, hard-tofind Southern fiction, kids' books, and saltwater fly-fishing titles. In a room overlooking Pamlico Sound, you can browse over a delightful selection of notecards and stationery. The owner, Gee Gee, is an avid reader and willing to discuss literature. Indian Town Gallery and Gifts

Nestled in the woods, Indian Town represents artists from the local villages. Many of the paintings have an Outer Banks offshore-fishing theme. The gallery also features pottery, chimes, cards, gifts, lighthouses, and jewelry. Artist Wayne Fulcher is often at work right in the store.

Hatteras Village offers a mixture of services, including a pharmacy, grocery store, and other shops. The ferry terminal's Ship's Store, located in the lobby, offers a selection of T-shirts, coffee mugs, coloring books, and souvenirs.

At the north end of Hatteras Village, this gallery showcases Outer Banks artists. Sandy Bay is filled with original watercolor and acrylic paintings and local photography. Glass boxes with silver trim by Mary Anne feature a geometric collage of colored and clear glass--they are exquisite. This is a special women's clothing boutique, one you wouldn't really expect to find on southern Hatteras Island. The Flax line of clothing is featured, though there are many other brands as well, including Kiko, Click, and April Cornell. The original Lee's opened in 1948 but was replaced by a replica several years ago. We're glad it kept the old look, including the wide front porch and the wooden floors. Owners Belinda and Virgil Willis carry items you need for a vacation at the beach, plus something you wouldn't necessarily expect to find at a beach general store: a great selection of fine wine. The store also carries groceries (including gourmet items), chocolates, fudge, books and magazines, T-shirts, sweatshirts, jewelry and gifts, plus sundries such as film, lotions, boogie boards, and hats. Don't miss the upstairs gift gallery. You can rent bicycles here, too. It's a good place to buy a Coke in a glass bottle and something to snack on for the ferry ride to Ocracoke. Right next to the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry docks at the southern end of Hatteras Village, this spiffy shopping center means you'll never again have a boring wait for the ferry. The only problem is that people get carried away with shopping and are late for boarding. Hatteras Landing Provision Company stocks a large selection of sweatshirts, T-shirts, and other clothing with Outer Banks themes, along with jackets, windbreakers, hats, and other clothing. Graveyard Deli and Market opens into the Provision Company and offers deli sandwiches, snacks, candy bars, chips, gum, drinks, beer, wine, and many sundries that you'll need for a day on the boat. Birthday Suits is an Outer Banks favorite, carrying fashionable swimwear for the whole family. For hard-to-fit women, there are bra-sized tops that can be mixed with separate bottoms, plus long-torso suits and maternity suits. Men's sizes range from 28 to 4XL and include competition briefs and volleyball and surf trunks. Kids' swimwear ranges from size 2 to preteen, as well as swim diapers. Birthday Suits has a huge selection of OBX gear and contemporary sportswear for women, men, and children.

Surfside Casuals is a surfwear store selling swimsuits for men, women, and children, plus casual beach clothing, sandals, sunglasses, and T-shirts. Women love the fact that they can buy separates here, mixing and matching bottoms and tops. Farmer's Daughter brings a country- casual look to your home. Gifts and collectibles are the hallmarks of this store, which is an Outer Banks favorite. There are also original artworks by Outer Banks artisans, and the world's first and only supply of saltwater fudge.

Lightkeeper Gallery features exclusive artwork by local artists. Photographs by Scott Geib are stunning, and there are numerous paintings with Outer Banks themes and beautiful cards. Gift items are also available, including T-shirts, coffee mugs, coasters, and prints. Kitty Hawk Kites/Carolina Outdoors is an outdoor store selling kites, toys, outdoor apparel, sunglasses, sportswear, and more. This location has a rock-climbing wall right in the middle of the shopping center.

Ocracoke Island

Shopping in Ocracoke is casual, interesting, and easily managed on foot. Small shops are scattered throughout the village and along the main street, on sandy lanes, and in private homes. You'll also discover that some dockside stores have the feel of a general store. Ocracoke Village shops offer a variety of local crafts, artwork, quality accessories for the home, antiques, beachwear, books, music, and magazines as well as the ubiquitous T-shirts and even a few souvenir mugs. An ABC package store is adjacent to the Ocracoke Variety Store.

This shopping complex houses Sally Newell Interiors, with furniture, home- decor accessories, window treatments, and more for the home. Newell is a member of the American Society of Interior Designers and has designed many resdential and commercial interiors. Eleven Eleven Shades and Movies offers just that--highend sunglasses and video rentals. Ocracoke Restoration Co. is stocked with English stained glass, old and new furniture, architectural ornaments, old doorknobs and drawer pulls, and interesting salvaged materials. Pink Pig, housed next is chockfull of fun things for fun people. Dirty Girl, Paul Frank, and other cool items are featured.

On the corner of School Road and NC 12, a lovely historic home under a canopy of trees houses these two wonderful shops. Deepwater Pottery is a working pottery studio and gift shop, carrying handmade stoneware, candles, and glass, surprising home and garden accents, and a special bath section, which is filled with soaps and other great-smelling bath luxuries. The bath section carries Burt's Bees products as well. Books to Be Red has a wonderful selection of books by local authors, new-age journals, magazines, cards, and a paperback section of fiction, nonfiction, and children's books. There's a gently used section of books also. The shop is open March 1 through Christmas.

Natural Selections, The Ocracoke Island Hemp Shop, offers a great selection of products made from hemp and other natural fibers. Natural Selections is a socially and environmentally conscious shop, committed to the belief that the use of hemp will save the planet from herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, and deforestation. Once you feel the natural fibers, you'll want to wear the pants, dresses, shirts, jackets, and hats sold here. Natural Selections also sells bags, hemp home accessories, natural cosmetics, jewelry, and gifts.

Captain's Landing

Just past the Jolly Roger Pub and Marina is this little conglomeration of shops, not really connected but clustered around the post office. Downpoint Decoys, a small rustic shop under an old oak tree sells decoys both old and new and the local carver/proprietor is available to talk to. He also sells lures, painted oars, and wildlife art. On the waterfront, Joyce's occupies the first floor space of Joyce's of Ocracoke Motel and Dockage. Owner Joyce L. Barnette offers well-made, comfortable men's and women's apparel, including a collection of classic, sophisticated clothing for women in sportswear and dressier island styles. Joyce also offers an intimate apparel section. The shop carries lovely accessories for the home, such as collectors' items with frogs, cows, rabbits, fish, shells, and teddy bears. Other great finds are handcrafted fashion jewelry in all price ranges, mobiles, gifts, cards, stationery, wrapping paper, and T-shirts with unique designs. It's open March through Thanksgiving.

Harborside is one of the many pleasant surprises for visitors to Ocracoke. Quality sportswear for the family, a gourmet food section, gift basket service (some readymades are available), teas, cooking items, pottery, books, and magazines share the shop with an interesting collection of T-shirts and-look up!-a model train that chugs along overhead throughout most of the store. Village Craftsmen

Village Craftsmen is an Ocracoke landmark-it's been in business more than 30 years-but it isn't as easy to find as, say, the lighthouse. The shop is on the narrow dirt lane known as Howard Street, a bit of a walk from the main street. Here you'll discover an abundance of North Carolina crafts, pottery, rugs, books, locally made soaps, candles, and jewelry. You can buy stoneware, tie-dyed dresses, and T-shirts, too.

Owner Philip Howard, a seventh- generation Ocracoke Island resident, sells his pen-and-ink and watercolor prints in his shop. A fine selection of cassettes and CDs features Celtic, blues, jazz, and bluegrass music. Musical instruments, such as catpaws and strumsticks, help set a creative mood at this out-of-the-way place. The instruments are lightweight and simple to play. You can pick up a mail-order catalog at the shop or have one mailed to you. Village Craftsmen closes for the month of January.

Over the Moon is a wonderful shop filled with handmade contemporary crafts. More than 100 artists and craftspeople provide work such as jewelry, porcelain, and Brian Andreas's StoryPeople-books, prints, and sculptures with insights written on the work. There are also pins and magnet cards, Metamorphicards, and hammock chairs. Pace yourself; this is a place to linger. It is open Easter through Thanksgiving.

Come listen to the tales of the notorious Edward Teach-better known as Black- beard the Pirate-at Teach's Hole. The "piratical pirate-phernalia," as George and Mickey Roberson call their collection, includes a gift shop and exhibit. More than 1,000 pirate items, including a life-size recreation of Blackbeard in full battle dress and artifacts from the 17th and 18th centuries, form the exhibit. One exhibit features "Blackbeard's Doom" on an eight-minute video viewed for a fee. Items in the gift shop include pirate toys, music boxes, movies, and more than 100 pirate book titles, plus maps, flags, hats, T-shirts, costumes, ship models, and treasure coins.
