The Shoreside Center

This center features national chains including Wal-Mart, Radio Shack, Subway, Dollar Tree, Cato's, and McDonald's. The shops are open year-round. Natural Creations Fine Jewelry is a locally owned shop selling a variety of contemporary and traditional jewelry. Seamark Foods is a large grocery store with a terrific bakery, deli, and salad bar. Seamark has an extensive selection of cheeses and wines as well as other gourmet foods not always available in other supermarkets on the Outer Banks. Seamark carries a large selection of fresh fish, shellfish (including live lobsters), and everything else you need to fix a seafood feast. There's another location in Nags Head at the Outer Banks Mall. Both stores are open year-round.

Situated on the lot in front of The Shore- side Center, locally owned Carawan Seafood sells fresh local fish and shellfish in season plus flown-in fish, seafood, and live lobsters. We know quite a few Insiders who frequent this shop several times a week. The store also carries a growing selection of wine and beer, gourmet food items, seashells, lures, and tackle. An expanded area next to the seafood shop sells Southwestern crafts, including rugs, pottery, dolls, jewelry, and gift items. Carawan is open year-round.

Daniel's Homeport is the largest store in this complex. Daniel's specializes in housewares and accessories such as candle holders, dried flowers, picture frames, wine racks, rugs, bedding, lamps, wicker and outdoor furniture, and much more. A full window-treatment department supplies curtains and shades, blinds, and shutters (some on order). In the same shopping center you'll find Red's Army Navy, a military surplus supply store, Soundfeet Shoes outlet shop, Wild Birds Unlimited, and the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters Thrift Store, where you'll find all sorts of used goods.

Buccaneer's Walk

Right next to Capt'n Frank's hot dog restaurant is Buccaneer's Walk, an attractive shopping complex fashioned after 19th-century fishing and whaling villages and coastal places the owners have visited. Capt'n Frank's Peanut Shop sells, of course, peanuts, in addition to candy, Carolina stuff, candles, linens, and gifts. Coastal Attitude offers a variety of home accessories, and decorating items. The Toy Boat toy store offers diversionary wares for kids of all ages. There are puzzles, games, dolls, baby toys, toddler toys, books, and more, all of it educational. Elizabeth Lord has handmade soaps and luxury bath items in stock. Tar Heel Trading Company stocks fine American handicrafts, artwork, and gift items. Craft kits for all ages make a rainy day fun. Ambrose Art has a great selection. Island Nautical supplies you with a bounty of sea-inspired gifts, artifacts, and books. If you're worn out from all that shopping, let Java Sweets revive you with coffee drinks and ice cream.

This is one of the newer shopping strips on the Outer Banks. Plum Crazy brings, hip, cool ladies' clothing, handbags, and accessories to the beach. Funky gift and home items will delight shoppers. Clothing by XOXO, Seven Jeans, and Luon St. Pierre furtniture make a stop here worth the trip. Cybercade USA is a computer and gaming center where you can rent computer time at reasonable prices. You can set up a vacation Internet account or ongoing account if you don't have your own computer. At Havana Cigar, Wine & Sandwich Co. you can indulge two favorite vices and have lunch. The wine selection is good, with unusual items plus hard-to-find dessert wines and port. The cigars are stored in a humidor for preservation purposes. The deli makes a mean sandwich. Luxurious red velvet furniture awaits you if you need to sit down. Cigarette City sells discount cigarettes, beer, and cigars

You're sure to find a suit to fit at Shore Fit, where the mission is to find a suit for the hard-to-fit woman. This swimwear boutique stocks swimsuits in sizes from 8 to 28, many that will enhance or flatten your curves. The store carries maternity suits, suits for women who've had mastectomies, athletic suits, cover-ups, sarongs, swim dresses, and more. The staff is very helpful, and you can order suits from the Web site. The boutique closes in the off-season.

Seagate North Shopping Center

At the north end of Kill Devil Hills, Seagate North offers a variety of shopping experiences. TJ's Hobbies and Computer Rx carries hobby and craft materials, model cars, airplanes, boats, rockets, and kites plus radio-control supplies for models and railroading equipment. The shop, open year-round, has metal detectors and computer sales, service, and consultations.

Black Tie Affair offers wedding services, formal-wear rentals, gifts, and more. Z-1 Gold-N-Gifts has gold, silver, diamond, and gemstone jewelry for sale; baby gifts and John Perry figurines are also in stock. Sun Shack is a tanning and clothing salon. Movies, Movies rents videos and provides all the services you would expect; it's open year-round.

The Coastal Cactus Southwest Restaurant is much more than a tantalizing restaurant. Inside, a unique Southwest gift shop sells collectibles like Peggy Karr Glass and Robert Shields Designs, wind chimes, nightlights, stuffed kokopellis and lizards, cooking apparel, salsas, and the largest selection of hot sauces available on the Outer Banks. There are numerous home accessories with Southwest designs and jewelry for kids and adults.

Cyber Dog is a holistic pet food and supply store. The Outer Banks Center for Alternative Medicine offers a variety of health items and natural remedies and occasionally hosts speakers.

Norm Martinus at Nostalgia Gallery specializes in antiques, vintage paper, antique advertisements, and custom matting and framing. If you're looking for picture-framing perfection, this is the place to go, and it's open all year. Martinus is the coauthor of Warman's Paper, an encyclopedia of antiques and collectibles. He's a real Insider on the subject and a local favorite. Stop and chat with him-he holds a warehouse of knowledge and is very personable. Corner Stitch and Frame sells the area's largest selection of needlepoint and cross-stitching supplies, and A Penny Saved Consignments has a variety of used goods for sale. In the parking lot of Seagate North is one of our favorite produce stands, Tarheel Too. You'll find a variety of fruits and vegetables, locally grown when possible, as well as some of the best mesclun mix around. Homemade baked goods and jellies are delicious.

Cooke's Corner

Cooke's Corner features a surf shop, children's clothing store, women's apparel shop, health food store, and NASCAR sports paraphernalia shop. Anchoring Cooke's Corner is Colington Speedway Sport Shop, offering NASCAR hats, shirts, cars, mugs, and sunglasses year-round.

Lit Records and Snowboards sells just that. Gaea Gifts for the Soul stocks jewelry, hand-blown glass, pottery, and wind- chimes. Glazin' Go Nuts is a paint-your own pottery studio that everybody loves, especially on a rainy day (see our Kidstuffchapter). Glazin' Go Nuts shares a space with Front Porch Cafe, a coffee shop that makes heavenly coffee drinks and baked goods and roasts its own coffee.

Awful Arthur's Beach Shop

This shop is a haven for Awful Arthur's paraphernalia inspired by the popular oyster bar next door. You'll find T-shirts, sweatshirts, golf shirts, hats, beach towels, and glassware bearing the eatery's infamous logo. Shop for beach needs, including beer and groceries, beach chairs and umbrellas, fireworks, seashells, tackle, coolers, and hermit crabs. Bad Barracuda's merchandise is available here, too. Awful Arthur's Beach Shop is open year-round.

The Dare Centre

This center is anchored by Belk's department store, which stocks clothing and shoes for men, women, children, and babies. There are also large shoe, accessory, jewelry, makeup, perfume, lingerie, and home decor departments. Food Lion, a national chain grocery store, is also here. Other stores include Atlantic Dance and Boutique, an Outer Banks dance studio. The boutique sells dancewear for adults and children. Next door is a thrift store, and next to that is Hairoics, one of the best hair salons on the Outer Banks. Fashion Bug offers discount fashions, and Dollar Tree has everything under the sun for $1.00. Kids love this store, but there are also good deals on toiletries and household items. Pilpel has everything you need for the beach-sunglasses, chairs, towels, clothing, and more. The Outer Banks Sports Locker specializes in sporting goods, sportswear, and fitness apparel and equipment. Good Vibes Video is a rental shop that offers box- office hits and esoteric art films. This location is open all year. The Blue Dolphin Full Body Dimensions is a wellness center that offers massage therapy, nutrition counseling, and, surprisingly, tanning beds.

You'll find plenty to eat at this shopping center. The Good Life Catering Co. is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and has great coffee and some of the best homemade breads and desserts on the beach (see our Restaurants chapter). New York Bagels has fresh, yummy bagels every day for breakfast and lunch. Little Caesar's Pizza is here, as are Subway for sandwiches and China King for take-out Chinese.

North Carolina Books

In the Times Printing building, North Carolina Books is chock-full of secondhand paperbacks and reduced-price hardcover books. Bring in your old paperbacks and use them as credit toward the purchase of other secondhand books from the store. The store also has new books and tapes and is open year-round.

Stop N' Shop Convenience and Deli

Insiders consider this little treasure trove a hidden gem. More than your average gas and goodies store, the Stop eN' Shop offers an upscale convenience alternative. The 7,000-square-foot store is jam- packed with tempting items. The deli (which starts serving fresh bagels, hot coffee, and breakfast sandwiches at 6:30 A.M.year-round) uses Boar's Head meats, and the store boasts a wide variety of gourmet food products and one of the best selections of wine and microbrewed beer on the beach. There are large selections of beach and fishing equipment; the store sells boogie boards, sand chairs, and umbrellas, and it sells and rents rods and tackle. The variety of daily newspapers is impressive. During the summer season, the store is open until midnight, 11:00 P.M. in the off-season.

Lifesaver Shops features practical shops. Lifesaver Rent Alls fills rental needs and offers thrifty bargains-these folks rent it all! Look for beach umbrellas, chairs, TVs, VCRs, baby equipment, cottage supplies, portable radios, microwaves, charcoal grills, and blenders. Linen service complete with sheets, pillowcases, and bath towels is offered. Sports items abound, too-look for surfboards, ocean kayaks, boogie boards, snorkel and fishing equipment, and bikes galore. It's open March through November.

For everything NASCAR under the sun, make a pit stop at T-Tops. This is a licensed NASCAR store with merchandise covering all NASCAR drivers. The main selling items here are die-cast cars, but there are also NASCAR-inspired jackets, sweatshirts, T-shirts, hats, clocks, wallets, jewelry, and more in this 4,000-square-foot store. It's one of the largest NASCAR stores in the nation and is open year-round.

On the west side of the Bypass, the Beach Barn Shops is the place to stop. It houses Birthday Suits/OBX Gear, a popular swimsuit and sportswear shop. Southern Living magazine wrote, "Everybody goes to Birthday Suits for a new bathing suit." For women, there's an unbelievable selection of cute suits in all styles, including mix- and-match separates, bra-size tops, and maternity, mastectomy, athletic, and long- torso suits. Women also love the contemporary sportswear, a fine selection of dressy dresses (including some by Betsey Johnson), and accessories-purses, shoes, hats, luggage, and pajamas. Men find trunks and briefs and a whole selection of sportswear and Hawaiian surf shirts. Kids' and babies' suits are adorable. Carolina Moon is a great place for finding unusual gifts, scents, pottery, stationery, and greet- ing cards. The shop has an outstanding line of jewelry of all kinds-you'll find pieces you've never seen before. The delightful Christmas ornaments add a whimsical touch.
