Corolla, about 10 miles north of Duck, offers convenient and novel shopping along NC 12. We begin at the northernmost point. Most Corolla shops close in the off-season.

Austin Building
NC 12, Corolla

Winks of Corolla is the anchor of this shopping center near Historic Corolla Village. Winks is the oldest store in the area; it's been around since before NC 12 was opened to the public. Winks sells gas, sundries, groceries, snacks, drinks, toiletries, and any other convenience items you'll need. Next door is the Corolla Post Office, Corolla Pizza, and an ice-cream store. Nearby, across and down the street at the satellite building, is the ABC store, the only place you can buy packaged liquor.

Historic Corolla Village

This off-the-beaten-path section of town, which is really Corolla proper, was the original town center in the days of old Corolla. Today, you see remnants of old Corolla by walking down the dirt roads north of the lighthouse. New stores have been built here as well, but in an old style that gives visitors the feeling of how things looked in old Corolla. Shop owners are proud to bring vitality back to this historic area and share the histories of their buildings with visitors. A walking-tour map also gives historic information. You can easily walk from The Whalehead Club to the lighthouse to the shops in Historic Corolla Village.

Outer Banks Style
NC 12, Corolla
(252) 453-4388

Outer Banks Style is housed in the old Kill Devil Hills lifesaving station, built in 1878. The Wright brothers walked on these floors, and some lifesavers from this station witnessed the world's first powered aircraft flight. Local lore also has it that a friendly ghost resides here. Outer Banks Style offers a distinctive collection of fine art, decorative art, and handpainted furniture. Each item in this inviting shop is unique and handmade. You'll find the whimsical renderings and musings of Brian Andreas, whose art is known as StoryPeople. You'll be tempted by rugs, photography, artwork, furnishings, linens, and gifts.

Lighthouse Garden
Corolla Village Road and
Schoolhouse Road, Corolla
(252) 453-0171

Lighthouse Garden is located in the former Helen Parker House (c. 1920). The home has been restored to its original charm. The Lighthouse Garden brings the spirit of outdoor living with decor for porches, gardens, and homes. Silk flowers and topiaries, concrete statuary, botanical prints, locally crafted iron works, birdbaths, mosaic furniture, and candles are among the great finds.

Old Corolla Trading Company

Spry Creek is a fun and funky shop. One step inside, and you may think you're in Tuscany or the Mediterranean. Bright yellow walls are a perfect backdrop for the Spanish, Mexican, and Portuguese pottery and ceramics on sale. Shoppers will delight in the jewelry, artwork, and decoys produced by local artisans. Mouth-blown glassware from Mexico, pampering soaps and linen sprays, and vivid stained-glass pieces round out the eclectic offerings.

The Island Bookstore
1130 Corolla Village Road, Corolla
(252) 453-2292

This shop is built on the site of Callie Parker's old general store. John Wilson IV (who has designed many of Manteo's historical reproductions) designed this new building, reminiscent of a mercantile in the 1930s. Bill and Ursula, the owners of Island Bookstore, bring more than 35 years of bookselling experience to Corolla. Best sellers are discounted here, and books are available on just about any subject matter imaginable. Southern and regional books are well represented in this atmospheric bookshop.

Duck

Duck is a shopper's best friend-and a budget's nemesis. People from all over the Banks come here for spending sprees. This small village is packed with shopping centers tucked into small nooks on the waterfront or in the trees. Duck is walkable; in fact walking is preferable to maneuvering a vehicle around all the SUV-filled parking lots and on the crowded two-lane road. A paved bike path runs the length of the village, making it safe to walk from place to place. Parking is at a premium in Duck, so once you find a space, hold on to it. Remeber, the sound of rain is every shopper's battle cry, so if you want to avoid crowds, don't go on a rainy day.
