The Outer Banks Hospital
4800 US 158, MP 14, Nags Head
(252) 449-4500, (877) 359-9179
www.theouterbankshospital.com

This 73,500-square-foot facility is the Outer Banks's first and only hospital, a welcome addition to the community. The hospital is a partnership between Chesapeake Health of Chesapeake, Virginia, and University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina. The two entities collaborated on Outer Banks emergency and primary health care in the past with HealthEast Medical Centers in Nags Head, Avon, and Hatteras Village.

The Outer Banks Hospital is a 24-hour facility with 19 acute-care beds and emergency services. Rooms include emergency observation rooms for monitoring patients, two labor/delivery rooms, and two operating rooms. A helipad is on-site. Patients with serious emergencies or major trauma are stabilized, then flown to a hospital in North Carolina or Virginia for further medical care. The hospital employs 55 physicians and 125 other staff members. Services include cardiology, dermatology, urology, endrocrinology, ophthalmology, obstetrics and gynecology, pulmonology, ENT (ear, nose, and throat), and senior services.

The hospital provides services for which in the past people had to travel off the Outer Banks. Sophisticated lab tests are performed here. Two operating rooms accommodate general surgery (in- and outpatient), orthopedic surgery, oral surgery, cesarean sections, and vascular surgery, among others, with pre- and post-operative recovery rooms serving the patients. Diagnostic services include anesthesia, pharmacy, lab and pathology, and physical and respiratory therapy. Oncology services and support groups are available, as well as radiology, including CT scans, ultrasound, and mammography. Wellness and preventive medicine programs are another service provided by this community- minded hospital.

For more information about the Outer Banks Hospital, visit the Web site or call the numbers above.
