Southern Shores and Kitty Hawk

Russell Yerkes

One of the Outer Banks's most popular artists is Russell Yerkes, probably best known for his vibrant "fish" paintings, though his subject matter encompasses much more than fins. This nationally recognized watercolorist creates imaginative images of aquatic scenes and accepts commissions.

The Greenleaf Gallery in Duck (see the separate listing under Galleries) carries a nice selection of Yerkes's work. Yerkes also serves as president of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina.

Pat Troiani

Pat Troiani is one of the Outer Banks's top watercolorists. She teaches her craft at her Kitty Hawk studio and primarily works in a realistic style. She's produced some gorgeous renditions of the Whalehead Club in the winter, beautiful florals, and various coastal scenes. Her work is sold at Indian Town art gallery in Frisco (see separate listings under Galleries). Troiani's work appeared on the 2004 cover of The Beach Book, a local phonebook. She offers classes twice weekly. Class size is limited to seven students. Troiani emphasizes color, composition, and drawing instruction. Call for an appointment.

W. E. (Ellie) Grumiaux, Jr.

One of the most recognized artists on the Outer Banks, Grumiaux, who works in watercolor, specializes in portraying the buildings, boats, and landscapes that typify this resort area, as well as the lesser- known places in the surrounding towns. Grumiaux is also the one to call for a portrait of your cottage or boat. His work is found in local churches, homes, and galleries such as Greenleaf Gallery in Duck, Seaside Gallery in Nags Head, and the John Silver Gallery in Manteo (see separate entries under Galleries).

Award-winning watercolorist Chris Haltigan offers lessons and original art for sale in her private studio. She describes her work as impressionism and contemporary realism featuring scenes from the Outer Banks and general locale. Her work is characterized by iridescent sound waters and atmospheric early-morning boat scenes. The passage of light gets special attention in her pieces. Call for an appointment to see Haltigan's work. The studio is open year-round.

E. M. (Liz) Corsa

Think Beatrix Potter. Throw in some sophistication and humor, and you have an idea of the depth and delight of E. M. Corsa's work. Referred to as a "watercolor wordsmith," her original watercolors and prints feature both wild and domestic animals with an attitude, presented in an anthropomorphic style. Corsa's inspiration comes from nature and family and is coupled with her unique sense of humor. She's a published writer of humorous magazine essays who combines images and titles in a thought-provoking and fresh manner. Painter Carol Trotman specializes in floral watercolors. Her complicated garden scenes as well as poetic profiles of single blossoms are exceptional. Vaughan paints in a folk-art style, producing town portraits in acrylics that are very popular on the Outer Banks. Available prints include her representations of Manteo, Kill Devil Hills, Duck, Elizabeth City, and Corolla. Vaughan also paints local scenes, and she welcomes commissions. Marsha Cline, a longtime resident of the Outer Banks, is well known for her dedication and versatility. Her medium constantly changes and expands, yet her style remains distinctive. People have come to recognize the vivid color and warm spirit in Cline's work. A passion for painting and love of life is evident in her local Outer Banks scenes, travel-inspired works, and latest passion to be captured on the canvas. Her work is on display in many popular local restaurants, such as the Rundown Cafe, Southern Bean, Quagmires, and Tortuga's Lie. Her work is also on display at the John Silver Gallery, at the KDH Cooperative Gallery, in area businesses, and in homes from coast to coast. She also paints by commission and welcomes contact by appointment at her home studio in Nags Head.

Ray Matthews has been living on the Outer Banks for more than 25 years, during which time he has developed a love for nature that is presented masterfully in his prints. Matthews is a consummate custom-slide printer as well as a commercial photographer. His work is shown at Browning Artworks in Frisco and Outer Banks Style in Corolla. Call for an appointment. The Hat Lady

At her working studio, Genna Miles creates fine-art wearable hats in one-of-a-kind designs. Miles employs spinning and crochet techniques with natural, hand- dyed fibers and trinkets to set off these artistic creations that will warm heads and hearts. Her baby bonnets crafted in 100 percent cotton are precious. The Hat Lady specializes in spinning animal hair into yarn. Bring in your dog or cat's shedded hair, and she'll make it into a hat for you. Miles accepts commissions. You can see her work in many of the annual Outer Banks art exhibitions where she has been known to break away from headwear and create fiber and mixed-media sculptures that reflect her love for nostalgic items and thrift-store treasures.

Local decoy carver Nick Sapone produces hand-carved, hunting-style decoys. He makes both wooden decoys and the traditional Outer Banks-canvas style. He welcomes visitors to his home studio by appointment.

Juried Art Exhibitions

The Outer Banks offers several juried art exhibitions each year. While the traditional definition of "juried" implies that work is selected for showing by judges, most shows here have an open-entry policy, and the work is judged for excellence and originality. Entry fees generally average $10 to $15. Here we've listed the major shows in the area; for detailed information, call either the galleries mentioned or the Dare County Arts Council (252-473-5558). Icarus International Art Show

Open to any artist, the Icarus International Art Show is held in December at Glenn Eure's Ghost Fleet Gallery and the Seaside Art Gallery (see listings under Galleries). The theme always revolves around flight, as the show was created to pay annual homage to the Wrights' first powered flight.

The Beach Book Cover Competition

Open to all artists, this annual competition selects one entry to be the cover of The Beach Book, the Outer Banks's telephone directory. The winning entry also appears on a billboard on U.S. Highway 158, welcoming visitors to the Outer Banks. This show is held at the Dare County Arts Council gallery each October. Past winners include a beach scene of a young girl painting, the Cape Hatteras lighthouse, a sandcastle, and a fisherman on the beach. The Atlantic Dance Studio, run by Victoria Toms and Mila Nurney, is a fantastic element of the Outer Banks creative scene. Toms brings with her an outstanding history of professional experience. She studied at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance and the Joffrey Ballet in New York City and ran a very large dance studio in Florida before coming to the Outer Banks. Atlantic Dance Studio offers lessons for adults and children in genres of tap, ballet, and jazz. Both locals and visitors are welcome-from the beginner to the professional.

The Studio's boutique carries garments, shoes, bags, and dance paraphernalia-items needed to keep dancers on their toes.

Island Dance Studio

Sophia Sharp has been teaching dance on the Outer Banks for more than two decades. Sophia, Miriam Michael, and their talented staff offer classes in ballet, jazz, tap, and preschool movement. The studio closes during the summer, so it caters mostly to local folks. Children and adults are instructed in the atmospheric setting of an old Nags Head cottage just off the ocean.

This dance school offers preschool through adult classes-in classical ballet, jazz, tap, Irish riverdance, Spanish flamenco, and more-throughout the week. Marjorie Knapp is the artistic director. A dancewear boutique is housed here as well.
