Back to New Bern: On the WaterOn the Water Tips
Riverside dwellers know to
plant beans and squash when the moon waxes, and that the best fishing is on a northeast
wind.
The
Neuse River Foundation offers guided canoe and kayak trips along several
eastern North Carolina waterways. Reservations are required
and trips typically cost $10 per person. For a schedule of trips and more
information, call the foundation at (252) 637-7972.
Croatan
National Forest maintains a number of sites that offer handy access to
water. Boat ramps and fishing piers at Brices Creek, Haywood Landing and
Cahooque Creek are handicapped-accessible. A complete list of boat ramps and
launching sites is available from the ranger's office at 141 E. Fisher Avenue,
New Bern, (252) 638-5628.
In
2007, the
state Department of Transportation will start a two-year project to
replace the Alfred Cunningham Bridge, which spans the Trent River and
connects downtown New Bern to Highway 70. While the project is underway, traffic will be diverted to the
Pembroke exit, located just minutes from downtown. Although a definite
timetable has yet to be established, the bridge is scheduled to be
replaced by 2010.
