Annual Events Tips
Before
the parking lot of the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center was paved in
2000, archaeologists excavated artifacts from what was once the site of
prominent New Bern merchant Samuel Cornell's 18th century home. By
unearthing the foundation, archaeologists not only uncovered the west,
north and south walls of the home but also discovered through dirt samples
and close examination of soil layers that the home was very likely damaged
in a 1769 hurricane. Cornell underwrote most of the construction costs of the
original Tryon Palace. Artifacts, including glass bottle fragments,
pottery, nails, thimbles, and a pair of copper cuff links, are currently
housed at a Tarboro research lab and will eventually be turned over to
Tryon Palace.
Every
Halloween the New Bern Recreation & Parks Department and the Craven County
Cooperative Extension host a festive parade of costumed preschoolers down
Middle Street to the Farmers Market, where the children are treated to fun
and festivities. Call (252) 639-2901 for details.
In
December, visit Santa Claus in his special Santa House on the corner of
Broad and Middle Streets in downtown New Bern. He'll listen to your
Christmas wishes Monday through Friday evenings, and all day on Saturday
right up until Christmas Eve.
Tryon
Palace Historic Sites & Gardens' African-American Lecture Series offers
historical and contemporary perspectives on topics ranging from slavery to
the civil rights movement to modern day race relations. Admission to the lecture, usually
held on the third Thursday of the month, is free. For information, call (252) 514-4900 or (800) 767-1560.

Pet
owners are invited to bring their pets to Christ Episcopal Church's Blessing
of the Animals, held every fall in honor of St. Francis of Assisi.
Eastern
Neuse River Initiative for Community Health (ENRICH) presents its annual
Health and Safety Expo every May. Local businesses and non-profit groups

health and fitness demonstrations, nutrition information and more. ENRICH is
a local Healthy Carolinians partnership for Craven and Pamlico counties that
works to improve the health and well being in the community. For
