Phillips
Island, in the Newport River just north of the N.C. State Port in Morehead
City, is one of several local islands leased by the National Audubon Society
for the protection of nesting colonial water birds. It is visible from the
high-rise bridge passing by the port. A brick chimney on the island is all
that remains of a defunct fish-processing facility.
Both
the Rachel Carson Estuarine Research Reserve and the N.C. Maritime Museum
schedule guided tours focused on specific ecological environments of the
Crystal Coast. Regular calendars of events are available at each facility.
All trips require reservations.
The
North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores' $3.4 million make-over is
complete, and so are recent improvements to Fort Macon. Both attractions are
favorites for locals and visitors alike.
