Providing a rigorous and relevant curriculum delivered by faculty and staff in caring relationships with students — that is the key to a quality education. And that is the focus of the Carteret County Public School System. Students across the grades continue to achieve top scores in this system, and, of the state's 115 public school systems, Carteret County ranks in the upper 10 percent. Carteret County Public School System focuses on providing a quality education to its approximately 8,500 students enrolled in 17 schools. The schools are located throughout Carteret County, from Atlantic to Cape Carteret. With about 1,218 employees, the school system is the largest employer in the county. County residents recently approved $50 million in school bonds to provide for major renovations at 14 of the county's 17 schools. The majority of the work is complete and all work will be finished by 2010. These renovations will address health and safety issues for students and staff and provide for new classroom construction at four schools. Carteret County public schools are governed by an elected seven-member board of education. Members serve four-year staggered terms and are chosen in county-wide, nonpartisan elections. School board members meet in open session each month. For information about the public
school system, including information about curriculum, testing,
transportation, employment and more, visit www.carteretcountyschools.org or
contact the Carteret County Public School System's Central Services office
(Board of Education), 107 Safrit Drive, Beaufort, NC 28516, (252) 728-4583.
There are also two publicly funded charter schools in the county that offer an
alternative educational approach. |

Onslow County School System is one of the largest school systems in the state, with a 2008-09 student enrollment estimated to be about 22,500. The system has several educational facilities — 19 elementary schools, eight middle schools, seven high schools and one alternative school. Five of these schools are in the Swansboro area, just west of the Carteret County line. Onslow County is the home of Camp
Lejeune, the largest amphibious Marine base in the world, and the Onslow
County School System's student population is indicative of the transient
nature of the military community. Approximately one third of the students move
into or out of the system or between schools within the system during the
school year. Much of this movement is attributed to the percentage of students
from military or military-connected families, and that number will continue to
grow as more and more troops are scheduled to arrive in the area. As with the
student population, the professional personnel of the Onslow County School
System is also impacted by the military community. The system hires about 350
new teachers each year. Approximately 25 percent of the classroom teachers in
Onslow County Schools hold a graduate license. For information about the
