In this chapter we introduce you first to the areas and neighborhoods that make up the expansive Crystal Coast and then to some of the area's real estate companies. Our lists are by no means complete, but they will serve to familiarize you with neighborhoods, businesses and services. The realty firms recommended here are listed in the area of their home office and then alphabetically. These are not the only reputable firms in the area, but we simply couldn't list them all. We revise this book annually, and we welcome your comments concerning additions or omissions in the next edition. One invaluable source of free information for anyone interested in purchasing property is HOMES Magazine of the Crystal Coast. This free monthly guide, published in cooperation with NC Coast Communications and the Carteret County Association of Realtors, contains descriptions of all the residential and commercial property in Carteret County. The guide also lists e-mail and homepage addresses for many of the individual Realtors. You can pick up a free copy at supermarkets, drug stores, restaurants and hundreds of local commercial establishments. We begin our review of the area by looking at beach neighborhoods. When we talk about the beach we are referring to the island of Bogue Banks, which encompasses the townships of Atlantic Beach, Pine Knoll Shores, Indian Beach, Salter Path and Emerald Isle. From there we move to historic Beaufort, then to the central town of Morehead City, westward to Swansboro and finally to the Down East reaches of Carteret County. As more and more people discover the Central Coast, real estate prices continue to increase. The average inland neighborhood home currently sells for about $200,000 to $300,000. Waterfront homes can go for $1 to $2 million. Like everywhere else, homes on the Crystal Coast vary tremendously in price, and proximity to water, historic districts, golf courses and upscale subdivisions accounts for pricier real estate. Significant development has taken place away from the water recently, and a wide range of housing is available. There is no specific relocation service on the Crystal Coast; however, rest assured that most real estate agents go to great lengths to ensure their clients have a smooth transition and move. The Crystal Coast Chamber of Commerce, (252) 726-6350, can also provide you with some information about the area. If the property you are
considering is not in an incorporated city or subdivision, ask your real
estate agent or the county planning office what uses are permitted in
that area. Large portions of Carteret County are not zoned and may
permit certain uses you have not considered — for your lot as well as
your neighbor's. As with all major purchases, ask questions so you'll
know before you commit. |
