Hidden away on the beautiful Bay River in Bayboro, Candace Young has been making one-of-a-kind stoneware and Raku pottery since 1981. Specializing in carved and pierced garden lanterns and lamps, Candace has designed clay tools to create exciting textures and shapes evocative of the natural environment of eastern North Carolina. Candace also has created a unique method of arranging flowers that anyone can use to make an free-form Ikebana arrangements and she gives free flower-arranging classes throughout the year. She also makes Raku pottery with a focus on "smoke painting" with feathers, horsehair and, upon request, pet hair for memorials. Smoke painting is a process that involves handling the pot at 1,800 degrees; the designs appear as if by magic as the hair is smoked into the clay. The studio is always open and is accessible by car and boat.  Visit the website or call for directions. Candace is always happy to demonstrate and give tours of the kilns and processes.  MH 10-24-07
