Pamlico County Neighborhoods

Pamlico County is in the midst of a growth spurt, and should you visit by car you may be quite aware of the 14-mile widening of N.C. Highway 55 from inside the Craven County line to the Pamlico County Courthouse at the intersection of N.C. Highway 304 in Bayboro. The road construction will be complete in mid-2009.

You may be visiting by boat from the Intracoastal Waterway, Pamlico Sound or Neuse River — possibly stopping at one or more of the pleasant small communities on the water. The towns of Vanmdemere, Bayboro, Oriental and Minnesott Beach are waterfront communities.

Pamlico County is a peninsula, bordered by water on three sides: Goose Creek and the Pamlico River on the north, Upper Broad Creek on the western boundary and the Neuse River to the south. Pamlico County was created out of part of Craven County in 1872 and parts of Beaufort County in 1874 and 1875.

The county historical association has built a museum – the Pamlico County Heritage and Visitors Center – in Grantsboro geared to Pamlico’s heritage of fishing, farming and forestry. Visitors can stop by the museum, which also houses the offices of the Pamlico County Chamber of Commerce for maps and information.

There are many small businesses in Pamlico County and many of those are “multi-generational.” Throughout history in Pamlico County, many residents became businessmen due to the needs of the community and handed those venues down to family. New small businesses are being added to the mix as more residents and visitors come to the county.
Leading crops in Pamlico County consist mostly of corn, soybeans, white and sweet potatoes, wheat and cotton, mostly replacing the once prominent tobacco. Forestry is a prime industry with pines being planted, maintained and logged on a regular basis.

An estimated 10 percent of Pamlico County's total population is involved in the commercial fishing industry. Seafood commonly harvested in the waters of Pamlico County are flounder, grouper, king mackerel, sea bass, sea trout, Spanish mackerel, striped bass, croaker, blue fish, red drum, black drum, mullet, catfish, common eel, crabs, shrimp, oysters, sea scallops and squid. Much of the manufacturing output of Pamlico County has to do with seafood processing and boat building. Many small manufacturing operations are found throughout the county.

Construction and the building of new homes is another provider of jobs in Pamlico County. More than 20 percent of the employment in Pamlico County comes from government, education, social services and health jobs. Approximately 12 percent of residents are involved in retail.

Quiet rivers and creeks bring residents and tourists to fish, sail and relax by the water. The town of Oriental (874 residents in 2006) is known as the Sailing Capital of North Carolina. The number of sailboats to Oriental residents has been estimated at 3:1.

The towns of Pamlico County include the county seat of Bayboro, along with Oriental, Vandemere, Mesic, Stonewall, Alliance, Grantsboro, Arapahoe and Minnesott Beach. Well-known communities include Hobucken, Lowland, Merritt, Reelsboro, Florence, Whortonsville, Olympia and the Dawson Creek area.

Real estate in Pamlico County is as varied as a day in May. While there is no formal county-wide zoning outside of the nine municipalities, the county does have a subdivision ordinance and a group housing ordinance. Bayboro, Vandemere, Minnesott Beach and Oriental have regulations geared toward development. The average price range for new homes in Pamlico County is $214,000 to $246,000, although million-dollar homes have been built.

This full-color publication has pictures of properties currently on the market. It is free and can be found at restaurants, hotels, supermarkets, real estate firms and local businesses.
