spacer.gif (818 bytes)New Bern offers many shopping opportunities, from large department stores to specialty shops and boutiques. Scattered among the streets in New Bern's Historic Downtown, you'll discover a distinctive selection of shops that make anyone's must-shop list. For a pleasant meander, stroll along Middle, Pollock, Hancock, Craven and South Front streets. We've highlighted a few of the shops you'll find along the way and a few others around New Bern. These shops are certainly not the totality of the New Bern shopping experience, but they'll whet your spending appetite. Because shops can — and do — change their hours to accommodate the needs of their customers, and because many have seasonal hours, you should call ahead to check what days and hours they are open. Antiques shops are featured at the end of this chapter. And don't forget to also check out our listing of art galleries in the New Bern Arts chapter.

The Downtown New Bern map (at the front of this book) shows the four free public parking lots in historic downtown. New Bern imposes a two-hour parking limit, and public employees are always on the move checking for time-limit violators.MH 02-01-08
