The rocking chairs and swing on
the long front porch and the two front doors (you'll see what we mean)
distinguish this Greek Revival–style bed and breakfast in the downtown
historic district. The original part of the house was built sometime before
1809, and additions and porches have been added. Around 1900, the house was
sawed in half, and the west side was moved nine feet to accommodate a new
hallway and staircase. The inn now has seven guest rooms and three romantic
suites, all furnished with antiques and homemade crafts. Two of the suites
have heart-shaped Jacuzzis, and all rooms have private baths and decorative
fireplaces. A full breakfast — which may include house specialties such as
stuffed French toast with homemade blueberry maple syrup, cheese strata,
potato, bacon and cheese casserole, and homemade coffeecake — is served each
morning in the dining room. Another Harmony House specialty is the Toffee
Bar Coffeecake, which was featured in the December 1999 issue of Bon
Appetit. Owners Ed and Sooki Kirkpatrick host a social hour each
evening, offering wine and cheese or other hors d'oeuvres. The Harmony House
was voted best Best Bed and Breakfast for 2005 and 2006 by the
Sun-Journal Readers' Choice Awards. |

Harvey Mansion Historic Inn The Harvey Mansion Historic Inn &
Restaurant offers three great options in one beautiful setting: a classy
restaurant, an elegant bed-and-breakfast and a fun nightclub. The
9,000-square-foot house, built from 1797 to 1804, is the last remaining
structure fronting the Trent River from New Bern's time period as a thriving
colonial seaport. The inn features three guest rooms with king or queen
accommodations available. The inn has several private bathrooms — one
includes a Jacuzzi bath and shower combination. All rooms share a common
living area with a balcony that overlooks Union Point Park and the Neuse and
Trent rivers. Rooms also have telephones and dataports should you wish to
stay in touch with the modern world while feeling so comfortably away from
it. |

Howard House Victorian Bed &
Breakfast Howard House, a restored Victorian home
in the heart of the downtown historic district, was built between 1888
and 1893 and reflects the detailed craftsmanship of the period. Owners
and hosts Steven and Kimberly Wynn offer six lovely guest rooms, each
with a private bath. The house's five-sided turret encloses an upstairs
guest room that has an antique queen-size bed. Other guest rooms are
beautifully furnished in period antiques; one has an antique sleigh bed,
another, a queen-size four-poster bed. Guests are pampered with special
touches, such as desserts every evening and a social hour. Attention to
special occasions like birthdays and anniversaries is easy to arrange;
simply ask your hosts. Bicycles are available for seeing the town, and
complimentary airport transportation is provided. A full and scrumptious
breakfast served each morning may include apple-pecan pancakes, Canadian
bacon, homemade breads, muffins and fresh-ground coffee, teas and juice. |

Meadows Inn The home of the Meadows Inn was a private
residence until 1980. The ca. 1847 structure is named for its original
owner, New Bern merchant John Alexander Meadows. Meadows Inn has seven guest
rooms, each with a television, VCR, private bath and antique and
reproduction furniture. The third floor, two-bedroom suite is perfect for
families traveling together, as children are always welcome at Meadows Inn.
Phones are available in each room, and local calls are free. Wireless
Internet access also is available at no charge. A full breakfast is served
every morning in the breakfast room, including hot entrees, fruits, breads
and a choice of coffee or tea. Complimentary soft drinks and tea are always
on hand. Romantic getaways, business meetings, destination weddings, family
reunions, small group retreats and conferences at the nearby New Bern
Riverfront Convention Center are but a few of the ways to stay at Meadows
Inn and experience hospitality with history. |

New Berne House Inn This Colonial Revival–style bed
and breakfast, located about a block from Tryon Palace, dishes up "Sweet
Revenge" several times each month with its popular mystery weekend, full of
intrigue and wonderful food at one price per couple. But staying here any
time can be a real treat. All seven guest rooms are air-conditioned and have
private baths. Rooms accommodate two people and are furnished with twin,
queen or king beds (one even features a "notorious" brass bed said to have
been rescued from a burning brothel in 1897). Guests always have access to
the house library. Host Barbara Pappas serves refreshments and beverages and
treats her guests to full, home-cooked breakfasts served on her collection
of vintage dishes, featuring many distinctive and striking patterns. |
