Overnight lodgings in New Bern present a delightful variety of vantages from which visitors may enjoy the town. The river city has several major hotels silhouetting its skyline and a number of excellent bed and breakfast inns. One inn is said to be inhabited by a friendly ghost, but if you're seeking less spiritual digs, you may choose from a nice variety of options. Many visitors choose the advantages of packages that offer discounted rates at lodgings and golf courses or dinner plans and a therapeutic massage. Hotels positioned along the city's picturesque waterfront offer lovely views of the Trent and Neuse rivers, and a number of economy and budget motels are near the downtown or outlying commercial areas. Cozy and architecturally interesting bed and breakfast inns are sprinkled throughout the historic district (see our New Bern Bed and Breakfast Inns chapter). The alphabetical listing of hotels, motels and condominiums in this section is not intended to recommend one lodging over another. We feel comfortable recommending all of the accommodations listed in this chapter.

Abilena is a 5-acre riverfront plantation and mansion on the Neuse River in New Bern. The 5,000-square-foot home was built in 1927 and is the area's only riverfront mansion rented for weddings, receptions, vacations, retreats and events. Abilena awaits your arrival for anything from a family reunion to an intimate reception for 30 to a wedding party of 250 people.

A wedding photographer for seven years, John Williams, and his wife, Mary Ann, purchased this magnificent property and have opened the house and grounds to allow you to have the wedding of your dreams. This is the ultimate location ... secluded, yet only five minutes from town. There are several acres for parking and events, yet at its core Abilena is still a charming home that will create lasting memories from the moment you drive down the tree-covered lane.

The amenities include a 20-by-40-foot in-ground private pool and a Jacuzzi for eight persons complete with fireplace and a river view. Inside the home, there is a full kitchen with washer and dryer, coffeemaker, refrigerator, stove, dishes and silverware, as well as a formal dining room. Five comfortable queen-size beds and two sleeper sofas will sleep 14 people, with the availability of two air mattresses for children and a private nursery off one of the bedrooms with a crib and rocking chair. Cable TV/VCR/DVD with access to a movie library of more than 100 titles and wireless high-speed Internet are available. A stainless steel gas grill is accessible for a family cookout or a romantic steak dinner. There is off-street parking for up to 75 cars. A two-person kayak and a 14-foot Hobie Cat sailboat are included with the house and may be used free of charge. Jet Skis are available for rent as well as a four-wheeler (riders must be 16 years of age).
 

The 115-room BridgePointe Hotel and Marina is just across the Trent River from New Bern's historic downtown area. Top-floor guest rooms have a beautiful water view of either the Neuse River or Trent River. Coffeemakers, refrigerators, microwaves, ironing equipment, Wi-Fi and satellite television with four movie channels are standard in every room. Room choices include a king bed, two double beds or a Jacuzzi suite. Meeting and banquet facilities are available. Guests of the BridgePointe Hotel are allowed to use the amenities available at Courts Plus, located off Glenburnie Road (see our New Bern Recreation and Parks chapter). In season, you also can relax at the BridgePointe Hotel's outdoor pool, and vacation and golf packages are available. The Outback Steakhouse is next door.
 

Located in New Bern's Historic District, this newly renovated hotel won the 2006 award for the best Comfort Suites in North and South Carolina as well as a Platinum Hospitality Award. This is nothing new for this fine hotel. In 2000 it garnered the Comfort Suites of the Year award and has been a Gold Hospitality Award winner for 12 consecutive years. Featuring a Colonial look and a warm, friendly atmosphere, the Riverfront Park hotel has 100 suites, many with waterfront balconies that offer beautiful views of the mile-wide Neuse River and others with views of Union Point Park. All suites have traditional furnishings and your choice of two double beds or a king-size bed, all with down pillow-top bedding. All rooms are equipped with a refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker, iron and ironing board. Whirlpool suites are also available. Other amenities include a 32-inch, high-definition TV in each room, free local calls and high-speed Internet access, an outdoor pool with a waterfront courtyard, an outdoor heated whirlpool, a waterfront gazebo, a fitness center, a guest laundry room, a board room and meeting facilities. Complimentary deluxe continental breakfasts are served each morning, and a complimentary evening guest reception is held nightly Monday through Thursday. The hotel is within walking distance of New Bern's downtown area and historic sites, as well as the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center. Significant discounts on room rates are available, so be sure to ask about the options.

The Riverfront Hotel''s restaurant, Christoph's on the Water, is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Beginning in April, and continuing through the warm summer months, The Deck offers the place to cool off and begin your weekend enjoying live entertainment while overlooking the beautiful New Bern Grand Marina.
 

The Thomas Sparrow House is the only accommodation of its kind in Downtown New Bern. It's a vacation home that allows a family or a group to rent the entire home. The Sparrow House can be rented for your wedding party or family reunion. The house sleeps 12 with four large bedrooms, six queen beds and adjoining full baths. The fourth floor bedroom has a two-person Jacuzzi. Air mattresses are available for children or an increased number of guests up to 20. Catering is available, or you may prepare your own meals in the full kitchen and enjoy them in the formal dining room. If you would rather dine out, the restaurants of historic New Bern are on your doorstep. The house has parking for 12 vehicles. Five flat-screen televisions, cable television, wireless Internet, DVD players in each room, and a washer and dryer are available. A professional management company since 1964, Vacation Resorts International manages properties in the Fairfield Harbour community, offering fully furnished one- to three-bedroom condominiums on a daily or weekly basis. The price code shown is based on four people sharing a two-bedroom unit during the summer. All units at Fairfield Harbour accommodate six to eight people, and guests are extended all development amenities, including the recreation center's two swimming pools and two golf courses. For rentals on a daily basis, a minimum of two days is required; for holiday weekends, a minimum of three days is required.
