Junior Sailing Program

The Junior Sailing Program is a basic and intermediate summer sailing program open to children ages 8 to 14. The program uses the fun of sailing and the competition of racing to teach rigging, sailing, seamanship, navigational skills and maritime traditions and history to young sailors. Instructors are certified by the U.S. Sailing Association as Small Boat Sailing Instructors and are certified by the American Red Cross in First Aid and CPR. Educators at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores have designed a number of fun, innovative programs and special activities just for youngsters. New to the lineup are hands-on "Aquarium ABCs" for preschoolers and "Critter Class" for ages 6 to 8. For kids in grades 2 to 7, the aquarium offers weeklong summer day camps, filled with hands-on, feet-wet field trips that get youngsters out and about in sounds and marshes. Summertime snorkeling outings are geared for ages 5 and older, and surfing lessons are offered for ages 10 and older. Aquarium programs vary with the seasons, and special activity programs require advance registration and fees. The Boys & Girls Club operates a club in Beaufort and a club in Morehead City. The Beaufort Club was the first in the county, opening in 1997 in the former Queen Street School. That facility has seen some renovation since that time, and the membership has grown. The new Morehead City Club is on the campus of Morehead City Elementary School. Attendees spend afternoon hours with directed programs of sports and interesting, interactive, positive goings-on. There is also a homework time. Club activities for kids from ages 6 to 18 are available on weekdays from 3 to 7 PM. Summer and holidays bring about expanded hours. The Boys & Girls Club also offers after-school programs at several of the county's public schools.TN 03-10-08

This department offers a lot of sports programs designed to teach children the fundamentals of the games and also the value of team participation and sportsmanship. Team sports include T-ball, basketball and coach-pitch baseball. In addition to sports, the department hosts a number of fun activities for children and adults. Many programs are free, but those with fees are reasonable and well-worth the cost for the enrichment they provide. Both city residents and nonresidents are welcome to participate in the department’s programs. The department also sponsors the North Carolina Seafood Festival 8K Twin Bridges Road Race that takes place the first weekend of October in conjunction with the Seafood Festival.TN 10-23-07

For years North Carolina Maritime Museum's education staff has provided environmental education programs for kids and for adults. The programs focus on coastal habitats and are highlighted by trips to barrier island beaches, maritime forests, salt marshes and tidal flats. In the past there have been trawling trips aboard a research vessel, bird watching, fossil hunts and kayak trips. All museum trips are guided. Kids have plenty to do during the N.C. Seafood Festival. On Saturday during festival, SasSea's Island Playground is jumping with hands-on activities for kids only. Shade trees, a beautiful gazebo and a playground set the backdrop for the fun. Sea Of Dreams

This imaginative public playground, designed with input from the kids who are now enjoying it, was constructed by nearly 200 residents of Carteret County about eight years ago. Walk through the entry towers and encounter a maze that sends kids ages 3 and younger in one direction and the older ones in another. Inside, there are slides, swings, ladders, spring bridges, a balance beam, a boat, a race car and so much more that it keeps the parking area full every day. Kids younger than 10 must have an adult with them. Groups of 10 kids or more may reserve time to use the playground. TN 10-23-07

This Presbyterian camp in a beautiful setting on Bogue Sound operates year round and is open to the public. Summer camp sessions are divided into age groups, with weeks dedicated to campers from 2nd through 12th grades. There is also a two-night, three-day mini camp for 1st through 4th graders. Activities include swimming in the pool and sound, basketball, sailing and canoeing, along with other traditional camp activities.TN 03-10-08 

Camp Seafarer and Camp Seagull

Camp Seafarer for girls and Camp Seagull for boys are on the Neuse River in Arapahoe, about 27 miles north of Morehead City and about 25 miles east of New Bern by car. The camps shares an outpost and docks on the Morehead City waterfront. Both are owned and operated by the Capital Area YMCA.

Campers enjoy a nationally recognized seamanship program, including sailing, watersports and ocean excursions from the Morehead City waterfront outpost. The camps conduct environmental education programs that serve schools throughout the state and offer facilities for corporate training and conferences. During the summer, the camps offer weekend and one-week family programs. There are also two-week and three-to-four-week camps for youth. Youth from across the county can take part in the Morehead City Day Camp. It is open to any child from preschool and school age and offers a variety of activities — field trips, arts and crafts, swimming, music, drama and sports games. Campers are divided into different age groups and supervised by a trained staff. The camp operates from 8 AM to 5:30 PM, and arrangements can be made for parents needing to drop their children off at 7:30 AM. Trinity Conference Center offers an outstanding environmental education day camp. Youth get hands-on exposure to several coastal habitats — the sound, marsh, pond, maritime forest and ocean dunes. They learn about creatures living in each environment, play interesting games, wade in the ocean, make crafts and learn about coastal cultures starting with Native Americans. The youth are with others their age, in groups for rising kindergartners to rising 6th graders. Campers bring their own lunches. The N.C. Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores offers several sessions of summer day camps from June through August. Each camp runs for five consecutive days.
