AttractionsAlthough there are few bona fide attractions
in and around Havelock, other than Croatan National Forest, the ones listed
here are must-sees for anyone traveling in the area. Harrier Monument An AV-8A Harrier jump jet looms at the intersection of
U.S. 70 and Cunningham Boulevard. Mounted on a pedestal and encircled by
flags, the AV-8A is a symbol of the past. Although Cherry Point is home to
the largest number of Harriers in the world, the AV-8A jet was taken out of
service during the mid-1980s and replaced by the new AV-8B. The most
noticeable difference between the two jets is that the landing gear on the A
was on the wing tips, while the B landing gear is closer to the center of
the wings. This mounted jet was the second AV-8A military officials gave to
civilians for display purposes (the first is on display at the Smithsonian
in Washington, D.C.). Aircraft Viewing The sound and sight of aircraft in flight is a regular
occurrence for locals, and it is often the very thing a visitor wants to
experience. Although there is no designated or best spot for prime viewing,
a good vantage point is along N.C. 101 near the main gate. Runway 5 ends
here, and if the winds are right, it is often used by Harriers, Intruders
and C-130 cargo planes. The sound can be deafening, so a few words of
caution: Brace yourself, warn your children and protect infants' ears from
the noise. Croatan National Forest This 157,000-acre national forest borders Havelock on
three sides and offers visitors and residents a wide range of activities.
Outdoor recreational activities include camping, picnicking, boating,
hiking, hunting and saltwater or freshwater fishing. For more information
about the Croatan National Forest, see our
Crystal Coast Attractions chapter. The Trader Store The Havelock Historical Preservation Society formed in
late 1998, growing out of an ongoing effort to restore the landmark Trader
Store on Miller Boulevard. The Trader Store, originally owned by Hugh and
Elsie Trader and donated to the society by Ernest and Frances Trader, was
once the center of commerce between New Bern and the coast, where families
used the barter system to purchase everything from aspirin to plows. In the
early 1900s, the store had the only telephone in the area. The restored
store features early twentieth-century artifacts, including the store's
original ledger. The Trader Store is open to the public Tuesdays and
Saturdays from 10 AM to 5 PM.

Golf and RecreationThe two courses closest to Havelock are the Links at
Plantation Harbour, a club on Adams Creek Road at the Carteret-Craven
county line; and Carolina Pines Golf and Country Club, between Havelock
and New Bern. Golfers staying in Havelock can catch the free Havelock-Minnesott
ferry, cross the Neuse River and play golf at the Minnesott Golf and
Country Club. You can find more information about these courses in our
Crystal Coast Golf chapter and the
New Bern Golf chapter. Friends Billiards & Pub Friends Billiards & Pub offers a casual atmosphere with
cold drinks, pool, darts and video games. There is no cover charge to
get in. From 10 AM until 8 PM, the under-21 crowd can enjoy soft drinks,
video games and billiards. Those 21 and older can take advantage of
drink specials. Friends also sponsors pool, dart and horseshoes
tournaments where you can test your skills against the area's best.

MarinasThose boaters with access to the air station also have
access to a number of launching facilities. Two boat ramps will get you into
either Slocum or Hancock creeks. Two other marinas, one on the Neuse River
and the other on Slocum Creek, provide boat rentals and docking facilities.
Without base access, your choices of marinas and ramps near Havelock are
limited. Check the marina listings in the
Crystal Coast Marinas chapter and
New Bern On the Water chapter for nearby facilities. Below are a few of
the closest choices. Matthews Point Marina At the mouth of Clubfoot Creek, this membership marina
often allows transient boaters to use an available wet slip overnight. A
clearly marked entry channel is provided along with facilities to
accommodate both sail and power boats up to 40 feet. The approach depth is 7
feet, with a dockside depth of 6.5 feet. Open year round, the marina has gas
and diesel fuel, electricity, a pump-out station, laundry facilities,
showers and ice. A clubhouse, cookout area and upper-deck lounge are
available to boaters. Finding the marina by land is more difficult than by
water. Land seekers should follow N.C. Highway 101 toward Beaufort. Just a
few miles out of Havelock, a church marks the corner of the highway and
Temples Point Road. The marina is at the very end of Temples Point Road.
They now have seven premier RV sites available. Cahoogue Creek The National Forest Service offers a boat ramp at
Cahoogue Creek, which allows boats to access Hancock Creek and the Neuse
River. In addition to the ramp, the facility provides a grill, picnic table
and small dock designed primarily to aid boarding. There are no restroom
facilities. When driving on N.C. 101, there aren't really any landmarks to
look for, so slow down and look for the road sign.

Real EstateResidential housing is abundant in Havelock, with prices ranging from around $50,000 to $260,000. The majority of homes in Havelock and surrounding areas are less than 15 years old. Many planned communities have popped up in the neighboring areas and appeal to a wide range of individuals. Lured by the mild climate, low tax rate and relatively low cost of living, many retirees, both military and civilian, are finding a home in the Havelock area. Some of today's primary growth areas are the waterfront developments along the Neuse River and large creeks. To get a good overview of the properties in Havelock and the services offered by the town's real estate agents, pick up free copies of Homes Magazine and other real estate publications at the Havelock Chamber of Commerce. Because of the number of military entering and exiting
the Havelock area, renting is a lot easier than in most areas. Rentals are
abundant and come in many forms, including houses, apartments or mobile
homes. Rental prices vary according to the type of accommodation and could
range from $425 to $750 per month. Many storage units are also available and
vary in size. 1st in Flight Properties Let Broker/Owner Lana Cieszko put her 20 years of

Commerce and IndustryThe number of manufacturing companies in Havelock
continues to grow. Through the years, several private firms have been
established and are helping to diversify the economic base of the city. This
growth is in part thanks to the efforts of the Craven County Economic
Development Commission (EDC) and Craven County's Committee of 100. (See our
New Bern Commerce and Industry chapter.) We have highlighted a few of
the largest industrial and manufacturing influences on Havelock's economy.
Although it is not a private company, we have listed first the Fleet
Readiness Center (FRC) East because of its tremendous economic impact on the
area. Wal-Mart is building a 184,000-square-foot Supercenter in Havelock,
which is expected to employ about 400 people. Fleet Readiness Center
East (FRC) East Cherry Point Fleet Readiness Center (FRC) East is one of six naval aviation maintenance operations that combine the skills and expertise of depot- and intermediate-level military and civilian maintainers to deliver cost-wise readiness to the U.S. warfighter. The FRC is North Carolina's largest industrial employer east of Interstate 95 and employs about 3,700 mostly civilian personnel. Established in 1943 as the Assembly and Repair Department, the facility has gone through several name changes over the years as well as extensive modernization and expansion. Today it is one of the Navy's finest aeronautical maintenance, engineering and logistics support facilities. Fleet Readiness Center (FRC) East is known as the Navy's center of excellence for vertical lift aircraft. The center refurbishes helicopters such as the H-46 Sea Knight, H-53 (Super Stallion/Sea Dragon/Pave Low), AH-1 Cobra and UH-1 Huey. It is also the only depot-level repair point for the Marine Corps' unique vertical/short take-off and landing (V/STOL) AV-8B Harrier. The center has extensive facilities to test and repair
a number of different engine types, including the T58-400, which is used in
the VH-3 presidential-executive helicopters. Fleet Readiness Center (FRC)
East provides worldwide emergency repair and field modification teams to do
repair work on aircraft unable to return to the center. At a moment's
notice, these field teams can be sent to any location around the world
during times of war and peace. Naval Air Depot (NADEP) Cherry Point Naval Air Depot (NADEP) Cherry
Point is one of eight such command sites that provide the highest standard
in warfare technology through supremacy in naval aviation technologies.
The depot is North Carolina's largest industrial employer east of
Interstate 95 and employs more than 4,000 mostly civilian personnel.
Established in 1943 as the Assembly and Repair Department, the facility
has gone through several name changes over the years as well as extensive
modernization and expansion. Today it is one of the Navy's finest
aeronautical maintenance, engineering and logistics support facilities.

United Parcel Service UPS offers express letter and parcel delivery, and
the Havelock facility is a regional terminal. Opened in 1986, this
facility currently employs about 50 people.

Services A number of services are available to the military and their dependents, ranging from housing to recreational facilities. Military family housing is now privatized and is available for all ranks. There are a number of ongoing construction and renovation projects underway as part of the Public-Private venture (PPV) initiative. These projects are expected to enhance the quality of life for the military members and their families stationed at Cherry Point. More than 3,800 barracks rooms are available for single personnel. Accredited by the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Health Care Organizations, the Halyburton Naval Clinic Cherry Point provides the primary medical needs for the local area's active duty and retired military community. The three-story facility was dedicated in memory of Pharmacist Mate Second Class William D. Halyburton, a North Carolina native, who was killed in May 1945, while rendering aid to a wounded Marine. Patients may be referred through the clinic for definitive care to other military treatment facilities or network civilian hospitals. Other facilities on the base are designed to afford military personnel a wide variety of conveniences and recreation. The newly remodeled Marine Corps Exchange offers a department store, furniture store, grocery store, flower shop, liquor store and a number of small shops. There are also dry-cleaning and laundry facilities, a child-development center, a bank, a credit union and a service center with a convenience store, as well as a number of restaurants. Recreational activities are geared to Marines and their dependents. These include a large gymnasium, fitness center, three pools, a bowling center, a number of marinas and the base stables. The Sound of Freedom Golf Course has been opened to the public. Recently renovated, the 18-hole course is located directly on the picturesque Neuse River with great water views, a character unique to the area and completely natural setting with no homes or condos on the course. The course features a 24-hour driving range, chipping area, practice putting green, club rentals, a snack bar and a certified PGA teaching pro on staff. Although the base offers many services for
convenience and fun, the Marine Corps stresses the importance of improving
one's education. The Jerry Marvel Training and Education Center provides a
wide range of educational services. Offices are operated by Craven Community
College, Distance Learning Center, Boston University and Park College. The
center provides services such as admissions testing, independent-study
course catalogs, counseling and a basic skills education program. Civilian
Career and Leadership Development (CCLD) is a series of programs designed to
improve the knowledge skills and abilities of the civilian workforce of MCAS
Cherry Point. Significant programs include leadership development,
mentoring, academic degree completion, and certifications. The base has one
of the most comprehensive libraries in the area with everything from
reference materials to children's books. Many more services and facilities
are on the base. MCAS Cherry Point is a community in itself. For more
information, call Station Information, (252) 466-2811, or the Joint Public
Affairs Office, (252) 466-4261.
