Down East

There are a few motels in the Down East area, and we've listed them here. Many people also enjoy the kind of island getaway that is a real back-to-basics experience, so we've also told you about accommodations available on Core Banks (Cape Lookout National Seashore). For information about Down East campgrounds, see our Camping chapter.TN 02-07-08

Great Island Cabins
$
National Park Service, Harkers Island
(252) 728-2250

Twenty-four rustic cabins are available on South Core Banks at Cape Lookout National Seashore. These cabins are arranged to accommodate 4, 6, 8 or 12 people and are rented on a per-night basis. The cabins are rustic and include several beds with mattresses, a gas stove with an oven, potable water, sinks, toilets and showers. There are hookups for generators, if you bring your own. Bring everything else you'll need, including cooking utensils and linens. A concessionaire operates these cabins for the National Park Service and provides transportation to and from the island from the Down East community of Davis. These cabins are very popular, so plan ahead and reserve early.TN 03-06-08

Morris Marina Kamps - South Core Banks
$
Atlantic
(252) 225-4261

Twenty rustic cabins that vary in size to accommodate six may be rented by the day on North Core Banks (Cape Lookout National Seashore). The price indicated here is a per-person rate based on a full cabin. Some cabins have no electricity, others have solar electricity, and others have electricity and air conditioning. Although water is potable, most visitors bring their own. Pack as you would for a camping trip, and you'll be most comfortable. Long a guarded secret of anglers, this cabin settlement is also the choice getaway for shell-seekers in the spring and bird-watchers in the fall. Ferries run from the town of Atlantic to the cabins several times each day, except from December through mid-March. Making reservations well in advance is recommended. If you take your four-wheel-drive vehicle over on the ferry, you can drive the 22 miles of beach on this island. See our Getting Here, Getting Around chapter for more information on the ferry.TN 03-06-08
