Atlanta was created from the wilderness; it grew into a major railroad center; it found itself a prime military target in the Civil War; and it was deliberately and utterly destroyed--all before the 17th anniversary of its incorporation as a city! From its earliest days, Atlanta was a crossroads and it still is that today, sitting solidly in the center of a network of roads, rails, and air routes. But it has also become a new kind of crossroads, this time on the information superhighway, as home base for CNN's mega-merger with Time Warner as well as for the Weather Channel. Modern Atlanta is composed of many parts. There's downtown, with its soaring skyscrapers and big-city pace. There's an an all-encompassing variety of nightclubs, the world's largest drive-in, barbecue joints, exquisite five-star dining rooms, and everything in between. There's the venues and public places created for the 1996 Summer Olympics. The spirit of change -- and the ability to attract people who share it -- remains Atlanta's abiding strength. Whether you're a longtime resident, a new Atlantan, a first-time visitor, or a frequent guest in town, we're glad to see you. Let this online selection from the Insiders Guide to Atlanta, or the full print book available here via the buy-the-book links, be your guide. Welcome! |
